 The Fall of Babylon
According to the cuneiform on Cyrus' cylinder, he was favored by Marduk and the other gods who wanted Nabonidus and Belshazzar dethroned and who assisted him in his quest.
Nabonidus ignored the god Marduk and during his absence from Babylon he failed to observe the important religious new year festivals.
He was welcomed as a hero and liberator and green twigs were spread in front of him and a state of peace was imposed upon the city.

Also, the king did penance before Marduk, and "took the hand of Bel" in a ceremonial processing out of the city through the Ishtar Gate.
The last king of Babylon, Nabonidus (556-539 B.C.) was an enigmatic figure who seems to have favored the moon god, Sin, over the national god, Marduk.
After the political rise of Babylon, Marduk was also considered one of the rulers of the cosmos.

 The Neo-
It is not clear which powerful faction in Babylon supported the kingship of Nabonidus ; it may have been one opposing the priests of Marduk, who had become extremely powerful.
The priests of Marduk looked to Cyrus, hoping to have better relations with him than with Nabonidus ; they promised Cyrus the surrender of Babylon without a fight if he would grant them their privileges in return.
The god of the moon rewarded her piety with a long life--she lived to be 103--and she was buried in Harran with all the honours of a queen in 547.

 ANE History: Judah in Exile
Most of the bricks found in the excavations of Babylon carry his stamp: "Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, supporter of Esagila and Ezida, exalted first-born son of Nabopolassar, king of Babylon." Esagila ("house whose top is lofty") was the Babylonian name of Marduk's temple at Babylon.
Nabonidus' own daughter was dedicated to the great temple of Sin at Ur, and the king's devotion to the moon god to the neglect of Marduk evidently aroused the priests against his religious program.
Not far distant was Marduk's temple, which the king restored, built with step-backs liike a modern skyscraper.

 Neo-Babylon, Daniel
Marduk, my Lord, give eternal life" (Marzahn 1994, 9).
He took the Jerusalem Temple vessels back for Marduk (Blaiklock 1983, 332-333), assailed Ashkelon due to failure to pay tribute, destroyed Ekron in Philistia, as evidenced by the Ekron Inscription/Temple dedication discovery of Seymour Gittin in 1996 (Price 1997, 226), and he journeyed to Tyre.
He believes that the object of adoration was probably an image of Marduk and not of himself; when people bowed down to the image they pledged their loyalty and allegiance to it and what it represents.

 DANIEL - Chapter 5 Commentaries
After nine months, Labashi-Marduk was deposed by an anti Marduk priestly revolution, and Nabonidus was made king in 556 B.C. Some historians say that Nabonidus was the son of Evil-Merodach (son of Nebuchadnezzar.
Nabonidus was a scholar and a worshiper of the moon-god Sin, rather than of Marduk, the god of Babylon who Nebuchadnezzar worshipped.
It should be said that some history books do not mention Neriglissar and Labash-Marduk.

If, as has been established, Nabonidus ascended the throne in 556 B.C. and his first full year was 555/4 B.C. (Nisan-Nisan), we should find this configuration of stars and planets during that period.

Belshazzar's name means "Bel (another name for the god Marduk) has protected the king." Perhaps the banquet was given to show Belshazzar's contempt for the Persians and to allay his people's fears.
At the end of the processional street in ancient Babylon sat the Ishtar Gate, covered in the symbol of gods Marduk and Addad.
Babylon was being besieged by the Persian army, led by Ugbaru, governor of Gutium, while Belshazzar, inside the city, was giving a great banquet for 1,000 of his nobles.

"The Exile" by Robert I Bradshaw
The Babylonian King Esarshaddon (681-669 BC) has left an inscription to the effect that the God Marduk should have been angry with his land until seventy years had been accomplished, though in fact he had mercy, and reduced the number to seven.
There is also some evidence that the number seventy had a symbolic meaning elsewhere in the Ancient Near East representing “a time of penitence intended to appease divine anger” (Baldwin, 1972: 97).

 Letter #59
According to him, Labashi-Marduk was a youth without understanding who, contrary to the will of the gods, had seated himself upon the throne of the kingdom.
There are hints of the palace revolution to which he owed his new position, of the support by nobles and army, but in very truth it was by the command of Marduk, his lord, that Nabu-naid was raised to the lordship of the land.
As for the sinner himself, may they throw Nabu-naid into prison in the underworld, may mighty bonds inclose his assistants, while in joy Marduk regards kindly Cyrus’ own kingdom.

 HARRAN by Rod Johanson
Thus the Marduk priesthood led a rebellion against Belshazzar, Nabonidus' son who left to rule in the capital while Nabonidus was campaigning in Arabia for some ten of his 17 year rule.
The weakened empire created by Nabonidus’ power structure and undermining of the priesthood of Marduk left his kingdom susceptible to the Persian aggression and in Cyrus conquest of the Babylon the battle was in essence over before it had begun.
According to Adad-guppi's biography, Harran lay desolate (in the possession of the Medes) for fifty-four years (610-556) until, at the beginning of Nabonidus' reign (555-539) a vision informed him that Marduk was to raise up his young servant Cyrus to scatter the Medes.

 BIBLE STUDY MANUALS: BELSHAZZAR
The New Year's festival honored the gods of Babylon, namely Bel and Marduk, not Sin.
The greatest condemnation is that the Babylonian New Year's Festival, the most important celebration of the year, was stopped until he had finished a temple to the moon god, Sin at Harran.
Column V contains a reference to Cyrus' conquest of Babylon so it is clear the previous columns have been talking about Nabonidus though his name is not used in the readable sections of the column.
