Even to those with little knowledge of gardening, mint is extremely well known; it may not be instantly recognisable from a visual point of view, but almost everybody is aware of its scent or taste.
Most are well known for their highly aromatic leaves, and many of the genera grown commercially for culinary use occur in Mediterranean regions.
It is also eye-catching in the herb or vegetable garden from midsummer until autumn and manages to remain unblemished regardless of the high rainfall we expect in Cumbria.

The name is sometimes used to refer to any member of the Labiatae, often called the mint family because many plants within the family are characterized by their aromatic foliage (see BASIL; OREGANO).
The true mints, however, are restricted to a much smaller group and its many hybrids.
