Louis Pasteur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Louis Pasteur demonstrated that the fermentation process is caused by the growth of microorganisms, and that the growth of microorganisms in nutrient broths is not due to spontaneous generation.
Modified version of florence flask (Swan flask) made by Pasteur in his experiment for disproving spontaneous generation theory.
His laboratory notebooks, now in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, in fact show Pasteur used the method of rival Jean-Joseph-Henri Toussaint, a Toulouse veterinary surgeon, to create the anthrax vaccine.

Small-scale processing of microbial pesticides. Chapter 6.
In the description of a fermentation laboratory which follows, it should be remembered that this describes the "ideal", a lab constructed ab finite for the purposes of microbial fermentation.
A fermentation laboratory is primarily a microbiology laboratory incorporating advanced technology equipment, and as such should be designed to maximize efficiency while maintaining a high safety standard.
The laboratory must also be supplied with good-quality water, for medium preparation and in areas where the local supply water is hard it may be necessary to install a deionizing system.

A medical laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are done on biological specimens in order to get information about the health of a patient.
Hospital laboratories are attached to a hospital, and perform tests on these patients.
This allows laboratory machines and computers to know what tests are pending, and also gives a place for results to go.

Place the flasks in an incubator at 37 C. A CO2 incubator is optimal for cell growth, but if one is not available, the substitution of minimum essential medium (MEM) for DMEM is recommended or DMEM with the addition of hepes buffer and sodium bicarbonate (NaCO3) may improve buffering capacity.
As each specimen is logged in, a laboratory identification number and information for the patient and specimen should be recorded in the log book or spreadsheet.
It is best to have the specimen shipped to a viral laboratory within 48 hours so that it can be processed and frozen at -70 C for optimal virus recovery.

Flasks samples are always collected in pairs, once or twice per week, on a schedule determined largely by the sample collector.
The effect of the flask and sampler improvements has been an increase in the percentage of sample pairs meeting a CO2 agreement criterion of 0.5 ppm, from ~75% in the mid-1980s to ~90% in 1992.
In this method two flasks are filled in rapid succession by holding the flask into the wind, purging the dead volume in the inlet to the flask, opening the stopcock, and allowing the flask to fill with air to ambient atmospheric pressure.

The CMDL flasks are packaged into 20-flask suitcases that have been used for several years for automated sampling aboard small Cessna airplanes out of Boulder airport.
We analyzed each flask from the COBRA-2000 summer campaign at the NOAA Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL), for CO, and SF which are all routinely measured on flasks from a network of over 60 background locations.
After examining the continuous data to ensure that significant layers were not missed by the flasks, CO column averages and boundary-layer minus background values calculated using 6 to 8 flasks are generally within 10% of those calculated with continuous data (see Figures 1, 2).

Glas-Col a manfacturer of Laboratory Equipment & Industrial Technology | Dr. Morey's Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
There as in most chemical laboratories, open flame gas burners and electric glow coils were commonly used to heat oil, sand, molten metal, and water baths.
Morey was injured in that fire, and it convinced him lab workers needed a new method for heating flasks--one that would eliminate the hazard of open flame burners and electric heaters with exposed coils.
The Moreys called their new invention a "heating mantle" because it could completely envelope a laboratory flask, just as the earth's mantle completely encloses the planet's core.

Some chemistry bungs may also include one or more holes so a glass tube or laboratory funnel may be inserted through the bung and into the container or another piece of apparatus.
The rubber bung may be used to seal a flask because the user may require the contents to be mixed via shaking the flask or may require that the contents be kept inside the flask and prevented from leaking out.
In all cases, the bung keeps the experimentation environment completely sealed so as liquids or gases cannot escape.
