The National Executive Committee or NEC is the chief administrative body of the Labour Party.
"Chairman of the Labour Party" until 2001; "Chairman of the NEC" from 2001 after Tony Blair appointed Charles Clarke to the courtesy position of "Party Chairman" without the NEC authorising such a position [1].
During the 1980s, the NEC had a major role in policy-making and was often at the heart of vitriolic disputes over party policy.

Disillusion and anger at a Labour Government is not the same as anger and disillusion with the Labour Party and we should continue to work with others within the Party who also wish to see meaningful change in policy direction and in the conduct of Government.

In recognition of his years of service to the Labour Movement in Canada, he was honored by Local Unions, Provincial Labour Organizations, the Executive Council of the Canadian Labour of Congress, and in 1992 was made an "Honorary Life Member" of the "New Brunswick Federation of Labour" with delegate privileges.
Eventually on July 20, 1957, he was appointed staff representative of the National Union of Public Employees and serviced local unions in the four Atlantic Provinces.
In 1964, he was elected President of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour, C.L.C. He he instituted changes in labour legislation in the field of collective bargaining for public employees in that province.
