Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Division of labour   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Unlike Plato, Smith did not regard the division of labour as a consequence of human inequality but famously argued that the difference between a street porter and a philosopher was as much a consequence of the division of labour as its cause.
Marx wrote that "as a result of division of labour," the worker is "reduced to the condition of a machine." He believed that the fullness of production is essential to human liberation and accepted the idea of a strict division of labour only as a temporary necessary evil.
Labour hierarchy is to a great extent inevitable, simply because no one can do all tasks at once; but of course the way these hierarchies are structured can be influenced by a variety of different factors.

LyricsVault: Hall of fame: Nick Lowe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Lowe was concerned with bringing back the tradition of three-minute pop singles and hard-driving rock and roll, but he subverted his melodic songcraft with a nasty sense of humor.
His early solo singles and albums Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust overflowed with hooks, bizarre jokes, and an infectious energy that made them some of the most acclaimed pop records of the new wave era.
Labour of Lust featured Lowe's one big American hit, "Cruel to Be Kind," which was a reworked version of an old Brinsley Schwarz song.

His 1979 album “Labour of Lust,” from which the title for the recently released “Labour of Love” is derived, was Lowe’s pinnacle of stardom.
On Labour of Love,” the tune is sung neither by Lowe nor Costello.
Without doubt, the most inspired rendition on the CD is Andrea Re’s funky and soulful version of “When I Write The Book.” Lowe has certainly written enough music to fill a book, and the musicians on this CD have provided Lowe with a glowing Foreword.

UB40 are not great innovators, but they are great imitators, and, in a sense, Labour of Love made them the Pat Boone of reggae.
Being that UB40 had the pick of the reggae litter, Labour of Love is chock full of stellar material.
The other two "Labour Of Love" discs are good also, but this is easily the best.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Israel
The particular Pharaoh of the nineteenth dynasty who treated the Israelites with special rigour was Rameses II, who became king at about the age of eighteen and reigned upwards of sixty years (about 1300-1234 B.C.).
He employed them on field labour (Exodus 1:14); engaged them upon the store cities of Phithom (the ruins of which, eleven or twelve miles from Ismailia, show that it was built for that monarch) and Ramesse, thus called after his name; and finally made a desperate attempt to reduce their numbers by organized infanticide.
These are Kibroth Hattawah (graves of lust), regarded as identical with Erweis el-Ebeirig, and Hazeroth, apparently identical with the modern 'Ain Hudherah (cf.

Nick Lowe - Labour of Lust | Z95-3
Jesus Of Cool was a jukebox, spinning out a series of perfectly crafted -- and decidedly quirky and subversive -- pop singles.
In contrast, Nick Lowe's second album, Labour Of Lust, is the work of a bar band, in this case Rockpile, playing the hell out of the same type of songs.
Recorded simultaneously with Dave Edmunds' Repeat When Necessary, Labour Of Lust benefits from the muscular support of Rockpile, who make Lowe's songs crackle with vitality.

They had heartlessly and needlessly opposed Israel's progress and transit, AFTER its Egyptian bondage, the ceaseless seeming labour in the sun, with fierce taskmasters, the slavery and the oppression.
Thus for Thutmose III, cheap (Jewish) labour would be both convenient and a containment of a hosted people, now become numerous and captive.
It is one thing to use violence of lust and hate, of desire and self-aggrandisement or fulfilment, of substitution for truth, and of will, to use all this as a MEANS of forcing people to accept a religion.

As a group of personalities, Rockpile was ill-fated to say the least, but as a performing unit, the band was without peer, and they lend Labour of Lust a primal rock muscle missing from perhaps all of Lowe’s other releases.
Columbia was expecting Nick the Knife to build on the success Lowe had hinted at with Labour of Lust, but it didn’t contain any “Switchboard Susan” or “Cruel to Be Kind”-sized hits, and his solo career was showing signs of foundering.
Actually Cruel to be Kind 1 was first issued as a 45 B-side (of Little Hitler?) and is quite different from the later hit version on Labour of Lust.

 Robert Christgau: CG: Artist 1003
He's shed one guitar player and no hooks and as a man he's probably better for it: his cool seems more casual, his lust more committed.
But the music is tossed off with what sounds like indolence rather than charm, and since Billy Bremner and Terry Williams are still on hand it would be too pat to claim he needs a real band.
And just like with Labour of Lust in 1979, he makes it sound so easy you expect a reprise a year for the rest of his life.

As busy as Nick Lowe was as staff producer for Stiff Records during the late 1970s, it's amazing he had the time to turn out his own impressive collection of work.
Labour of Lust, his second album, bristles with sharp, witty lyrics and driving guitars that crackle from crisp, economic playing.

 HIGH BIAS -- Rockpile
Rockpile was one of the greatest roots rock bands in history, the equal of celebrated combos like Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Beat Farmers, etc. So it's a damn shame that the British quartet made only one album, 1980's classic Seconds of Pleasure.
Covers of Berry's "Oh What a Thrill" and Joe Tex's "If Sugar Was as Sweet as You" (both sung by Edmunds) sound like they were written the day before the session instead of 25 years earlier.

Labour of Lust is a calmer collection, sticking mostly to medium-tempo rockers played by the dependable Rockpile (Lowe, Edmunds, drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner).
Following Labour of Lust, Lowe put down his cutting sword and moved into a rootsier room of rock's house.
He resumed his solo career with Nick the Knife, not surprisingly filled with more toe-tappy love songs.

But he also knows that on a deeper level, though songs may come and go, style's the thing, and he's heretofore been able to animate a subculture with stylish wit and knockabout rock & roll.
On his first record, Pure Pop for Now People, Lowe authored a primer of modern poses and virtually reinvented power pop with songs like "(I Love the Sound of) Breaking Glass," "So It Goes" and "Nutted by Reality." Pure Pop–and Labour of Lust, too–were entertaining and culturally acute; The Abominable Showman is merely entertaining.

It’s almost absurd that Labour of Lust came so quickly after Jesus of Cool (even though “So It Goes” had already been recorded two years prior), considering Lowe’s insanely busy schedule around the time.
Silliness!) will probably make you long for more idiosyncratic material.
These are all minor complaints though… Labour of Lust is slightly less impressive than that year’s highlights such as Squeezing Out Sparks, Rust Never Sleeps and Highway to Hell, but a place among or near London Calling, Look Sharp, The B-52’s and that debut album by The Specials is also damn impressive.
