  Labour Unions (Moral Aspects)
Since a labour union is a society, its moral aspects are determined by its constitution, its end, its results, and the means employed in pursuit of the end.
In the case of the labour union, the greater part of the moral condemnation that is pronounced has reference neither to its constitution, its general aims, nor its net results, hut to its actions.
For example, when labourers withdraw their trade from a merchant because he refuses to refrain, at great financial loss, from patronizing a manufacturer who, we will suppose, is justly boycotted by the labourers and their friends, he is compelled to undergo a loss that is out of proportion to his duty of assisting the latter.

Union meetings, in many countries, were attended by the local policeman who reported on the meeting to the authorities.
The period from 1849 to 1880 is the period in which labour unions were formed, grew into organizations of size, gained their first experience with labour conflicts, failures and minor successes.
The succeeding period, from 1880 to 1914, saw the labour union movement grow into mass organizations, forming an international organization, running major strikes, and causing the electoral laws in many countries to be reformed.

Anthony de Jasay, The Things Labour Unions Are Up To: Library of Economics and Liberty
“Unions are an outdated relic of the smokestack era”.
To change this, the union must be strong enough to discipline its own members so they will only work at the rate negotiated by it on their collective behalf, as well as to discourage non-members from free-riding on the union’s efforts.
Union membership as a share of the labour force is over 80 per cent in Scandinavia, in the mid-20s in Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain, and only 8 per cent in France, with virtually zero in the private sector.

CLC/CTC > Community Data for Labour Councils and Unions
The tables at the end of this paper contain data on union coverage (the percentage of workers covered by a collective agreement) for each CMA for 1997 and 2003, broken down between men and women, the public and private sector, and for young workers.
Union members are much more likely to work in the public sector, social services, or in large private sector firms, and are also older and better-educated than non-union workers on average.
It is more meaningful to compare union and non-union wages holding some of the big differences constant — for example, by comparing the wages of union and non-union women in the private sector.

Labour unions in the Republic of Korea: Challenge and choice: Discussion Papers: Publications: International Institute ...
Labour militancy is ascribed mainly to a repressive state that closes the political space through which organized labour expresses and accomplishes its political and economic demands.
Unions need to improve public opinion about the labour movement, but this is extremely difficult in a country where wage earners are hostile to radical and militant action on the part of workers.
It is ironical that the labour movement was unable to strengthen its social and political position in the process of democratization although it was largely responsible for the demise of the authoritarian regime.

While it is practical for the Government to attempt to recuse itself from labour conflicts, it still needs to be heavily involved at the onset on any union formation, and to be responsible for educating all parties.
However, labour unions, which would receive dues from both Caymanian and work permit holders, would have a different agenda from the Government, and would operate to protect the rights of all workers regardless of nationality.

Unions have a small full time staff and therefore rely on the voluntary activity of their members to be effective: labour education is therefore a major contributor to building an effective volunteer force.
Unions represent collective worker aspirations to wrest greater control over work processes from employers and at the same time are the primary bargaining agents seeking agreements with employers: agreements which incorporate unions into employer goals.
The union's purpose is to provide a broad educational experience which challenges their members to question social, economic and political structures -- the dominant political hegemony -- and to review the role of unions in society.

Among the reasons for it, were the strength of unions and their success in obtaining international certification in most of the maquiladoras, thanks to the efficiency and quality of workers from Matamoros.

Deputy general secretary of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, Alfred Mudenda, said his organisation would support similar action "in principle", but warned that that further consultation was necessary to assess the effect it would have on ordinary Zimbabweans.
It is still unclear whether unions in Lesotho, Swaziland and Malawi, which do not share borders with Zimbabwe, have also agreed to give moral support for the blockade.

 Bahamas Labour Unions
One point worth emphasizing is that the concept of unions should not be blamed for the West End-Jack Tarr fiasco, but, the legislation -- that granted union leaders coercive powers that they had no moral right to possess -- should be held responsible.
It was obvious that union leaders did not act in the best interests of its members -- yet those members who did not agree with the union -- and who could have put a stop to the madness -- were silenced by "closed shop" laws, and the mandatory payment of union dues.
With the implementation of the first proposal, union leaders will have to work for their member's interests rather then taking such dues for granted -- that is, if they wish to keep their members (and their mammoth six figure salaries).
