WHOI : Oceanus : Labrador Sea Water Carries Northern Climate Signal South
Labrador Sea Water is a subpolar water mass shaped by air-sea exchanges in the North Atlantic.
Labrador Sea Water (LSW) is the end-product of the transformation process, described in the preceding article, that modifies warm and saline waters through heat and freshwater exchanges with the atmosphere.
Although the top of the LSW layer is at the sea surface in its subpolar source region, in the subtropics it is isolated from contact with the atmosphere and occupies depths between 1,200 and 2,200 meters.

As in all flyfishing for salmon and sea trout that enter rivers to spawn only when conditions are right, timing is essential to success.
Many waters in this area of Labrador, accessible only by float plane from a small number of lodges, are world famous for eastern brook trout that routinely reach the 8 to 10 pound range.
Virtually any major rapids in the river where sea run fish found an obstruction to their upstream migration was full of fish.

Climate Change and Arctic Sea Ice
The Arctic's sea ice is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including polar bears, arctic foxes, seals, walruses, and whales, fish species such as Arctic cod and char, and sea birds such as guillemots, auks, and eiders.
The sea ice is also used as an important transportation route by caribou and muskox and a traditional hunting ground for the Inuit, that remarkable indigenous culture of the far north.
Many species of seal are ice-dependent, including the spotted seal, which in the Bering Sea breeds exclusively at the ice edge in spring; the harp seal, which lives at the ice edge all year; the ringed seal, which give birth to and nurse their pups on sea ice; the ribbon seal and the bearded seal.

AUV seeks clues to global climate change in Labrador Sea - MIT News Office
Along with regions in Antarctica and the Mediterranean, the Labrador Sea is the site of deep ocean convection, or the mixing of near-surface water into the ocean's depths.
This vertical mixing of the Labrador Sea -- a critical part of the thermohaline cycle -- delivers cold water to the deep ocean as part of a larger circulation process transferring heat from warm tropical climes northward.
Supported by MIT Sea Grant with major funding from the Office of Naval Research, AOSN is a collaborative effort involving scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the University of Washington, and Chapel Hill, NC-based Electronic Data Consultants (EDC).

Using passive microwave data from 1978 to 2000, he finds that the extent of this thicker sea ice is declining at a rate of 6.4 ± 2.2 percent per decade, with a strong correlation (-0.77 correlation coefficient) between declining extent and rising summertime surface air temperatures.

Decadal variations in Labrador Sea ice cover and North Atlantic sea surface temperatures
The spatial and temporal evolution of winter sea ice anomalies in the Labrador Sea and associated sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the North Atlantic are documented for three periods of above-normal ice cover: 1972–1974, 1983–1985, and 1990–1992.
Above-normal sea ice is consistently accompanied by below-normal SSTs in the subpolar Atlantic: the latter persist 1–3 years after the decay of the ice anomalies and in some cases exhibit a tendency for eastward movement across the gyre.
The role of atmospheric forcing in the joint evolution of anomalous sea ice and SST is assessed by means of an ice-ocean mixed layer model forced with observed air temperature and wind fields.

Labrador Sea Deep Convection Experiment (1997)
The primary goal of the Ocean Winds Imaging (OWI) complement was to collect data to verify the utility of passive ocean wind vector sensing in high seas, with secondary goals being to better characterize the thermal emission and scattering signatures of the wind-driven ocean surface.
During the Labrador Sea deployment the OWI complement observed the ocean across sections of several convective meteorological systems driven primarily by arctic cold-air outbreaks moving eastward from Labrador, Canada over the open water.
The complement also included a nadir infrared pyrometer for measuring sea surface temperature, a GPS dropsonde package (provided by NCAR) for measuring subtrack pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind vector, and several video cameras (provided by GIT) for recording ocean foam and cloud conditions.
