  Labyrinth (film)
Labyrinth (film) is one of the topics in focus at Global Oneness.
In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was an elaborate maze-like structure constructed for King Minos of Crete and designed by the legendary artificer Daedalus to hold the Minotaur, a creature that was half man and half bull and was eventually killed by the Athenian hero Theseus.
Labyrinth is a word of pre-Greek ("Pelasgian") origin absorbed by classical Greek, and is apparently related to labrys, a word for the archaic iconic "double axe", with -inthos connoting "place" (as in "Corinth").

Pan's Labyrinth - Music from the Movies
The film is receiving great reviews as it steadily opens worldwide, revealing itself to be an eloquent blend of horror, fantasy and war — belying its kiddy-friendly exterior and detaching itself from similarly-themed films like Labyrinth and Mirrormask.
In many ways it’s a companion piece to Del Toro’s 2001 film The Devil’s Backbone, which was similarly set in fascist Spain and saw a young child attempt to detach himself from a world he didn’t understand, or couldn’t cope with.
When applied to a sweet solo violin in ‘The Fairy and The Labyrinth’ it’s achingly beautiful, on solo piano in ‘The Tale’ it’s full of innocence, while its dramatic rendering with the full string section in ‘Ofelia’ is passionate and shocking.

Guillermo Del Toro/Pan’s Labyrinth Interview by Paul Fischer at the Toronto Film Festival
Labyrinth revolves around Ofelia, a young girl who immerses herself in books, moving into remote rural woodlands with her mother to join her violent, controlling and anarchistic step-father, a fascist military officer hunting down the last guerilla fighters that remain to oppose Franco's rule.
A film that strikingly contrasts a very brutal reality with a certain youthful innocence, Del Toro admits he was “scared shitless” in casting the right actress to play Ofelia, one of the screen’s more complex child characters of recent memory.
The director was then able to return to his roots with Pan’s Labyrinth, a film that explores the director’s dark and light view of humanity.

Pan's Labyrinth is easily del Toro's most ambitious film, but his attempt to blend graphic social-realist historical drama with fantasy imagery comes over like Terry Gilliam doing Ken Loach, and then getting lost on the way to the editing suite.
The film's big fault is that these two narrative elements simply do not connect sufficiently to drive the tale.
Ofelia's wanderings into fantasy land are, presumably, supposed to be deciphered as the corridors of her subconscious, from which we are meant to deduce allegorical import and deep meaning.

 sonic-cinema.com: Pan's Labyrinth::film review
Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” comes along at just the right time, and that it stands out in the crowd is a credit to its’ maker, who has crafted an affecting and haunting vision.
Given the nature of the film, it’s a bit surprising there isn’t more of the fantasy element in the story, but when one steps back to consider del Toro’s story, you see the focus del Toro shows as a screenwriter, making any criticism on that front moot.
Personally, “Pan’s Labyrinth” didn’t reach the heights of dramatic and fantastic wonders as “Spirited Away”- the film that came to mind most during the film- but del Toro’s dark vision of how reality and fantasy lead a young girl on an unnerving quest of self-discovery is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the critically acclaimed movie “Pan’s Labyrinth” is the story of a young girl living in Spain who creates an imaginary world.
However, while there were areas of intrigue, the film never really lets its hair down, further adding to its grayish quality.
Although for a film noir (ish), it’s pretty brutal and intriguing, plenty of eye-popping violence and sabotage to go around.

After viewing the trailer for "Pan's Labyrinth," I made the mistake of thinking it was a remake because it has been marketed as a fantasy which features a young girl in a labyrinth with a Hoggle-like creature.
The extent of this evil is illustrated during one early scene in which an army captain graphically caves a man's face in with repeated strikes from the butt end of a whiskey bottle.
