Many styles of lace were made in the heyday of lacemaking (that stretched possibly between the 1500s-1700s) before machine-made lace became available.
Bobbin lace is a delicate lace that uses wound spools of thread (the bobbins) to weave together the shapes in the lace.
The lace is held in place with very fine lace pins while being worked and is made on a lace pillow (a cloth form traditionally stuffed with straw or sawdust).

The theory that lace-making was brought to the area by Huguenot and Flemish refugees in the late sixteenth century has been increasingly discredited, in recent years.
Bone lace was so-called because of the fishbones that were used to hold it in place on a square of parchment pierced with holes, which was the pattern.
The lace was used for confirmation veils, baby's bonnets, collars and cuffs, bedspreads, doilies, handkerchiefs, napkins, placemats, runners, tablecloths, and edging for window-blinds.

For personal reasons I stopped making lace in 1990, and immediately prior to moving to Crete sold my enormous collection of pillows, bobbins, books and other items, many of them antiques.  Some were auctioned at Phillips, whereas others were sold privately.  Many of my books were donated to the local Public Library.
In 1980 I was shown the few remaining examples of Winchelsea Lace that had been preserved in the museum of that tiny Sussex town, and I was fortunate enough to be able to study them in sufficient detail to be able to make accurate copies of the patterns.
Fortunately, the quality of the lace is not affected by the quality of the equipment used to make it.

Continue making the lace the length needed, remove from the fork and you will have one side with really long loops and one side with short loops.
It is made the same way you would do Hairpin Lace Lesson 19 except instead of having the stitches in the MIDDLE you have them closer to one side of the fork.
