		According to my sources Athens symbol was an A without the little bar which, in ancient greece was an A. Actually, the symbol you are thinking of, the lambda, was sparta's symbol, and it was the letter "L" in greek.
		The reason it is associated with sparta was because of sparta's real name at the time which was "Laconia" or you could also say "Lacedemon"
		The letter "A" now, was either a normal; modern, "A", or a lambda with a horizontal slash coming from the bottom left of the symbol.
