Lackland Air Force Base was established on June 26, 1942, when the War Department separated part of Kelly Field and names it San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center (SAACC) to support the war effort.
Lackland established itself as a cohesive training base and formalized training evolved to support the Air Force Mission: " To Fly, To Fight, To Win." The basic training and commissioning programs inspired Air Force pride.

Lackland Air Force Base, located seven miles west of San Antonio, was originally part of Kelly Field (see KELLY AIR FORCE BASE).
In 1946 the base was renamed Lackland Army Air Field for Gen. Frank A. Lackland, an early commander of Kelly Field, and after separation of the air force from the army in 1948 it became Lackland Air Force Base.
It gained 151 jobs with the transfer of the Inter-American Air Forces Academy to Lackland, and 450 jobs were gained as technical training course instructors from two closing bases were transferred to Lackland.

Lackland Air Force Base accounts for more than one-fifth of the people dismissed from military service under the controversial policy.
From 1993 through 1997, Lackland discharged 761 recruits for sexual behavior with someone of the same sex -- three times as many as the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago and 10 times as many as the Army's Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., according to the figures.
Most of the Lackland discharges took place during the first month of training, often in the first week, according to the figures.

A little-known Lackland AFB training school was the target of peaceful protest by about 40 people Sunday, as a much larger protest against a controversial training center for Latin American soldiers was wrapping up in Georgia.
A public affairs officers for Lackland said about 800 people from Latin America and the Caribbean are trained each year at the academy, which has been at Lackland for 10 years.

The Lackland Museum added a C-131A at the gate to the hospital this was done maybe 10 years ago.
The XC99 was (and probably still is) located alongside the Kelly AFB runway on the "lower" entrance to Lackland.
Forty years has eroded my memory, but I thought that there was a B36 on static display at the entrance to Lackland AFB when I was there in 1962.

If so, a retired drug dog may be an excellent training tool for you and save your dept. some of time and money if they allow you to train along side their dogs just for the retired dog to stay in practice and for you to pick up the handler skills.
You can always float the idea past your supervisors, if they consider it, you'll need to see if the Lackland crew would be agreeable to telling you the commands used and the dogs capabilies- however, they may balk at the idea due to fear of liability or some other type of lawyer-driven BS.
Lackland AFB does place dogs that wash, but the screen the family/person to make sure that the placement is good.

Upon their suggestion and recommendations, I applied for and was accepted as an Instructor at Lackland AFB Texas.
We started at the Kennels on Lackland AFB (Basic Obedience) and then moved to Medina AFB (Scouting and Attack).
She has been known to enter kennels at Lackland that many others feared to tread and played with the "Bad Ass" dog.

Recently, when I found out that he would be accompanying the Yellow Rose to Lackland I took the opportunity to ask again and he graciously stated that it would be an honor to do it.
After completing the Oath, he shook my hand and congratulated me. Upon landing at Lackland AFB and after all the crew exited the aircraft, I turned to him to complete the job by giving him the sharpest salute ever and he returned a most memorable salute that will never be forgotten.
Here’s to his past enjoyment and dedication to these birds and to my present love for them and wishing that he were still here to love them once again…and here’s hoping that these planes continue to fly and outlive us all.

She was a T.I. at Lackland in 1983 and then got commissioned and went to Asia (unknown where) as a 2nd Lt. I lost touch with her and wanted to thank her for doing me a real solid.
She and I were in basic training at Lackland AFB, TX in May 1990 then we went on to Keesler AFB, MS for school.
I am currently at Randolph AFB TX, I believe she is originally from Texas and her ex husband's name is James Luton, They have two children, Danielle and Jordan.

 Lackland AFB Air Show 2004 - TX - USA
All aircraft are ground instruction airframes and none are flyable, although one of the instructors told me that they could probably start the engines on several of them if they had to.
They used to have an F-16B (with an LD tailcode) but that was moved to the Lackland parade grounds, repainted and re-coded.
All aircraft except the C-130 are kept in hangars although it is not unusual to spot the F-5F on the ramp next to the C-130 from time to time.
