  Breeds of Livestock - Lacombe Swine
The Lacombe breed is the fifth ranking breed of swine in Canada; 1,743 were registered in 1981, of which 648 were boars and 1,095 were females.
From 1954-57, Lacombes were evaluated in 60 commercial Yorkshire herds in Alberta and proved to have the performance, capabilities and meat qualities that were sought.
Lacombes were accepted for registration by the Canadian National Livestock Records in 1957, and in 1959, the Canadian Lacombe Breeders' Association was incorporated under the Livestock Pedigree Act.

Lacombe (52°28′N 113°45′W) is a town in central Alberta, Canada, located north of Red Deer, the nearest city; and south of Edmonton, the nearest major city.
Lacombe is named after Father Albert Lacombe (28 February 1827 – 12 December 1916), a French-Canadian Oblate (Roman Catholic) missionary who lived among and evangelized the Cree and Blackfoot First Nations of western Canada.
Lacombe is also home to one of Canada's largest agricultural research facilities, the "Lacombe Research Centre", at which the world famous "Lacombe hog" breed was developed.

It was turned over to the Town of Lacombe who continue to maintain it as part of the grounds of the Lacombe Memorial Center.
When one begins to examine the monument, one cannot help but be startled by the sheer numbers of individuals from the community who lost their lives in the World War I. There are 72 names inscribed on the cenotaph, this from a community with an estimated population of only 2,500 in 1912.
This mortality rate was ultimately a contributing factor to Lacombe's loss of vitality in the 1920's when it lost to Red Deer its status as the pre-eminent community between Calgary and Edmonton.
