Topic: Lacus Autumni

In the News (Fri 1 Jan 10)

  Lacus_Autumni - The Wordbook Encyclopedia
Lacus Autumni (Latin for "Lake of Autumn") is a region of lunar mare that lies near the western limb of the Moon.
Lacus Autumni lies in the northeastern quadrant of the gap between these two mountain rings.
Unfortunately this section of the lunar surface is difficult to observe directly from the Earth.

 Lacus Autumni - Red Enciclopedia

There was also a region on the Lunar farside that was briefly misidentified as a mare and named Mare Desiderii (Sea of Dreams).
A related set of features are the Lunar lacus (singular lacus, Latin for "lake"), which are smaller basaltic plains of similar origin:

A wealth of topographic detail is on offer this evening, from the fine details in the lunar seas Maria Nectaris, Tranquillitatis and Frigoris, the fascinating plain of Lacus Mortis within which resides the crater Burg surrounded by ridges and rilles, to the crater-filled southern uplands dominated by the spectacular 125 km Hommel.
The outer regions of the Orientale basin are stained by lava flows, and of these Lacus Veris and Lacus Autumni (the Lakes of Spring and Autumn) are situated just on the near-side and may sometimes be glimpsed even if Mare Orientale is not on the disc.
During this apparition, from 17 to 21 April, observers will be able to discern the central lava-filled plain of Orientale right on the lunar limb, surrounded by the narrow lava tracts of the Lacus Autumni and Veris.

You can also spot some points that call your attention because of the emotion they represent, like the Bay of Love, the Lake of Solitude, the Bay of Success, etc. Then you can proceed to identify other plains that are around your favorite ones.

You have correctly identified Lacus Veris and that is a segment of Lacus Autumni towards the middle of the image to the right of LV.

I hope to get a better look at the bright area to the SW of the southern end of Lacus Veris--I'm not convinced that is Nicholson and Pettit.

I could definitely see Lacus Autumni, which lies between the Cordilleras and the Rooks, and bits of Lacus Veris peeking out through a low pass in the Rooks.
The terminator was about at the crest of the Rooks, and it looked like there was a lot of limb left, so I have hope (if the sky stays clear) of getting a look into the Orientale Basin tonight.
I also plan to see if I can see the rest of Lacus Veris, Wright and Shaler and the nearby Vallis Bouvard, Focas, and especially the craters Kopff, Maunder, and Hohmann inside central Mare Orientale.
