This is Roger out having one of his late night affairs, his wife must be very understanding.
These are three good looking specimens I captured in the lacustuary of the Black River at it's confluence with Lake Erie.
Lacustuary is my term for the fresh water version of what is called an estuary in marine situations.

Lacustuary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A lacustuary is a freshwater estuary where river and lake waters mix, especially near large bodies of fresh water such as the Great Lakes.
These lacustuaries are slack water that can ebb and flow as lake seiches affect water levels.

Great Lakes Areas of Concern: Black River, Ohio
One area that will benefit from riparian protection once non-point source pollution is controlled is the lower 6-8 miles of the Black River (known as the lacustuary area or the Lake Erie influenced stretch).
Within the Black River lacustuary area, the effects of point source pollution have been minimized to the level that the overall water quality and fish communities are on the verge of recovery.
This is due to the closing of the USS/Kobe coke facility in the early 1990's and the upgrading of the Elyria Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Protecting What Has Been Gained in the Black River - Status and Perspectives on the Black River
Initial data indicated that impacts to biological communities were being strongly affected by discharges in Elyria and contaminated sediment in the Black River lacustuary (i.e., that portion of the river influenced by Lake Erie, approximately the lower six miles of the river), resulting in nonattainment throughout the Black River mainstem.
Monitoring in 1992 showed recovery from impacts associated with the Elyria Wastewater Treatment Plant discharge in the mainstem (Figure 2), while the East and West branches were found to be widely impacted from nonpoint pollution (sediment and nutrients) mostly originating from agricultural activities.
A site at the mouth of the lacustuary was able to reach warmwater habitat status in 1997.

Some of the questions raised concerning Jensen and Stahl's hypothetical site may be answered by studies at this site.
OEPA is using a lacustuary vertebrate index, developed for mixed lacustrine and estuary environments.
With qualitative and quantitative sampling, OEPA will determine baseline conditions in the impacted area and, over the course of a 5-year monitoring program, will assess benthic recolonization.

My research at ESF focuses on the effects of water levels on habitat for wetland fishes in the Thousand Islands section of the St. Lawrence River.
I am developing an index of biotic integrity (IBI) for coastal and lacustuary wetlands along the St. Lawrence using data about the fish and vegetation communities.
For my degree, I am co-advised by Donald Leopold and John Farrell.
