Lada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lada made its name in Western Europe selling the Lada Riva in large quantities during the 1980s, but subsequent models have not enjoyed the same success as the Riva.
Lada's first attempt at a modern car came with the Samara hatchback in 1987, which made use of a completely new mechanical design.
Lada have a 35-year tradition in motorsport, mostly concentrated in the home market and not visible for international audiences; but that will change now and the three years commitment to the FIA WTCC will allow Lada to promote this campaign aggressively.

Lada Riva - Review - Life with three Ladas
Anyhow, my folks must have been smitten and, because the village garage had a Lada franchise, my mum got her second car in April of 1986, her first new one and, to top it all, it was of course another Lada.
Ladas, of course, stopped being sold in this country in about 1996 when they could no longer conform to emissions constraints.
My father still speaks with reverence about the Ladas (especially as you never see them anymore), citing the fact that they were a much safer bet than a secondhand car in the old days.

 UK CAR REVIEW Lada Riva
These days the cars tend to be run into the ground and scrapped, unless their owners are part of the band of Lada enthusiasts scattered across the UK.
Around town the Riva more than holds its own in terms of performance, eagerly keeping up with the other traffic, and not needing too many gear changes as the engine is surprisingly torquey.
Overall, the Riva is a simple, rugged, cheap and reliable means of getting from A to B. Second hand examples can be found at literally give away prices.

Despite the Lada's image as a cheap car, the price of spares was not noticeably cheaper than those for basic level Western European cars, and the parts were usually less reliable.

Owning a Lada taught me a lot about how to deal with, and ultimately to avoid, roadside breakdowns, and in particular how to keep the juice running through electrical circuits.

Cylinder head waterways used to corrode through, and if he ever gets electrical problems he can never be sure what version of parts were fitted as original (switches, looms, wiper motors etc.) - he will have to replace by sourcing a part that looks the same.
