Lady Jane Grey (October 12, 1537 – February 12, 1554), a great-granddaughter of Henry VII of England, was proclaimed Queen regnant of the Kingdom of England for nine days in 1553.
Jane's status as a monarch is controversial as her succession contravened an Act of Parliament, although this has also been the case with other English monarchs.
Jane's claim to the throne was through her mother, Lady Frances Brandon, who was the daughter of Mary Tudor (a daughter of King Henry VII of England) and her second husband, Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk.

This is an almost exact copy of the Deveria "Giovanna Grey" except for two major differences: 1) Jane's hair is not hanging in two tendrils on each side, and 2) the woman in the background on the right is now holding her hand up.

When Jane was fifteen, she was observed by an Italian ambassador, and reported to have been fluent in several languages, including Ancient Greek, and capable of debating the most intellectual points with anyone, including learned scholars.
Jane had been determined to go to her death with dignity, but once blindfolded, could not find the executioner's block.

Jane's father-in-law, John Dudley, the duke of Northumberland, had persuaded the dying Edward that his cousin Jane, a Protestant, should be chosen the royal successor over his half-sister Mary, a Catholic.
However, in early February 1554, Jane's father, Henry Grey, duke of Suffolk, joined Sir Thomas Wyatt in an insurrection against Mary that erupted after her announcement of her intention to marry Philip II of Spain.
On the morning of 12 February 1554, Jane watched her husband being carried away to execution from the window of her cell in the Tower of London, and two hours later, she was executed herself.
