 Early Years
The founders of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, chose her as the adopted patroness of the Hall because she was ever a friend to 'poor scholars' a pioneer in education, and 'as a mother to the students of both tJniversities'.
Margaret's father, the Earl of Somerset, and his brother Edmund, like every one of note in their time, were engaged in the French wars; Somerset was taken prisoner at Bauge in 1421, and had been for more than fifteen years a prisoner of war when he at last obtained an exchange.
Margaret took the matter seriously, being very anxious to do what was right; having the question greatly on her mind, she dreamed one night that Edmund was introduced to her by a bishop, so (being a well-brought-up child) she felt convinced that he must be the right man, and gave her decision in his favour.

 The Twentieth Century Society
Two important commissions in Oxford came to Erith's office in 1958-59: the Provost's Lodging at Queen's, an august ancient college in the heart of the city, and the new library for Lady Margaret Hall.
The library is, to my mind, one of Erith's most satisfying works, but for some it seemed, when new, evidence of Oxford's lamentable hostility to modern design, contrasting with the more progressive approach of Cambridge and the projected new universities.
New Oxford, a publication produced by the Oxford University Design Society in 1962, described the building as "travestied Georgian", pillorying its construction of "nursery bricks" with "slime-green stone".

Epigraphic Sources for Early Greek Writing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The ethos of Newnham, under its new Principal, seemed more practical, less sympathetic to pure scholarship than it had been, and it was clear that Oxford, with a strong recent tradition of integrating archaeological and epigraphic work into the study of Greek civilization, was a more logical base for a large-scale epigraphic work.
The opportunity for a move was mediated by Dorothy Garrod, Fellow of Newnham and prominent in air photography, who had developed ties with Lady Margaret Hall during the war.
In the dour post-war years, LMH, particularly perhaps Lucy Sutherland as Principal, retained a respect for what was cheerfully described as 'totally useless scholarship', and Anne went there as Research Fellow in autumn 1946, remaining there, much loved, up till and beyond her retirement.
