Valerie Hamilton, Lady Goulding (12 September 1918–28 July 2003) was an Irish campaigner for disabled people and senator who set up the Central Remedial Clinic in 1951, now the largest organisation in Ireland looking after people with physical disabilities.
Lady Goulding died, aged 84, on 28 July 2003, in a nursing home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sir Basil Goulding, in 1982, but survived by her sons, the eldest of whom, Sir William Goulding, is Headmaster of the Headfort School in County Meath; the other sons are Hamilton and Timothy.

Lady Goulding co-founded the Central Remedial Clinic in 1951 and was chairperson and Managing Director of the centre until 1984.
Lady Goulding was also nominated to the Seanad in 1977.

That was a sign of great independence and individualism and we are lucky that Lady Goulding was one of those who set the tone for the appointment of people of similar mind to this House in the 25 years since her appointment.

In response to the concern for those left with disabilities as a result of this illness, the Central Remedial Clinic was set up in April 1951 by Lady Valerie Goulding and Kathleen O'Rourke as a small non-residential treatment centre in a house in Upper Pembroke Street in the heart of Dublin.
Lady Valerie Goulding had already displayed her unique spirit of concern and charity through her previous work for the disadvantaged in Dublin.
Lady Goulding was Chairman and Managing Director of the CRC from 1951 to 1984.

THE passing of Lady Valerie Goulding will be mourned by her many friends and admirers in the Kerry area, particularly those who have had cause to avail of the tremendous facility she helped to provide at the Central Remedial Clinic in Dublin.
She will be remembered, in particular, as a pioneer for the proper treatment and care of many thousands of Irish people stricken with polio in the 1950s.
Lady Goulding was a formidable and dynamic force for change and made an outstanding contribution to Irish society during her long life.

Dargle Lodge in Enniskerry is a curious hybrid: a 19th century gate-lodge with a 1980s architect-designed house growing from its side.
It was the home of the late Sir Basil and Lady Valerie Goulding, who used to own the larger property next door, Dargle Cottage.
The Gouldings were keen plantspeople, and there are some fine specimen trees in the garden, including a beautiful Japanese maple, Acer 'Senkaki', also known as the coral bark maple, on account of its distinctive pink young stems.

I always found her a charming lady in the best sense of that word and she befriended me at a time when I was a lonely teenager in Dublin.
Lady Goulding and Kathleen O’Rourke who co-founded the Clinic, were wonderful pioneers and each of them stamped there own sterling qualities on what the CRC has become today.
In this respect, Lady Goulding was ahead of her time and even though I was absent from college for two years, she arranged an interview for me with her husband Sir Basil Goulding, Chairman of W and HM Goulding Ltd., who were about to open a fertiliser factory in Sligo, my home town.
