In 1935 an even larger project began downstream of the two earlier dams - the construction of Ladybower Dam, which flooded the area around the junction of the Derwent with the Ashop.
This project, first mooted in the early 1920s, caused considerable controversy because it involved the flooding of two villages; Ashopton - which lay at the junction of the Ashop and the Derwent - and Derwent, which lay upstream on the Derwent river.

Ladybower and its connecting reservoirs are beautiful, serene stretches of water in the glorious Derbyshire countryside; the whole area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and I have visited it many times and absorbed its beauty.
Somehow, and I can’t remember the exact process because such things are intuitive to a writer, I transferred that image to that of the perfect reflection of totally identical twins, and the loss of a way of life to the loss of life itself.

The first Dams, the Derwent and Howden were built early in the last century and were followed by the Ladybower which was completed in 1943, although it took a further two years to fill.
At 504 acres the Ladybower was at the time the largest man made reservoir in Britain.
The Ladybower is situated on the A57 Sheffield to Glossop road and is about 11 miles west of Sheffield.

The Visitor’s Centre at Ladybower has always been a Mecca for Sheffield cyclists, mostly happy to cruise round the reservoirs and enjoy the scenery but there is some excellent riding in the area for the more adventurous.
The first climb is the bad one but from the top you are rewarded by a blast of a descent – fast and open at the top but becoming more technical lower down.
A 5km road stretch takes care of half of the second climb; the rest is fairly straightforward and brings you out on the ridge separating Ladybower and Edale.

Also, with regards to the Ladybower, several years ago I recall the water level was so low that you could see the buildings buried beneath.

I should know, my club is Glossop SAC a mere few miles away and we also had to work in another nearby resie to extract an overturned truk trailer loaded with mega rolls of printing paper.
The best thing about Ladybower / Derwent is mountain biking around it in the winter.
