In the News (Thu 23 May 13)

  Laelia
Laelia is a small genus of eleven species from the orchid family (Orchidaceae)
Laelia is one of the most important and popular orchid genera, because of the beautiful flowers, their genetic properties and because they are fairly easy in culture.
Laelia speciosa is a high-elevation plant, preferring sunny, dry and cool conditions.

Orchids of The World - Laelia
Dedicated probably to Laelia, one of the Vestal Virgins, or perhaps from the name borne by females in the Roman patrician family of Laelius.
The orchids found are mainly terrestrial, the epiphytic orchids (such as the laelias) confined to the narrow stretches of forest and scrub bordering the rivers and lakes which often extend for hundreds of kilometres.
This Laelia grows in a harsh environment indeed; on Vellozia (Canela da Ema - ostrich legs) shrubs fully exposed to the elements on the summit of the Serra da Sincora.

 Laelia Orchid Information
A lot of Laelia are cool growing plants, but the majority prefer temperatures in the intermediate to warm house.
Plenty of water and fertiliser is the norm during the growing season, with less during the winter months.
Laelia flower at any time of the year depending on the species, but with a tendency towards spring with the majority.

 Laelia anceps hybrid - Orchidaceae
Laelia anceps hybrids are closely related to the genus Cattleya.
Sometimes laelias are hard to distinguish from cattleyas, their differentiation lies in the number of pollinia; laelias have eight (arranged in two set of four), cattleyas have only four.
Propagation: Laelia anceps hybrids are propagated by removal of backbulbs in spring.

SBOE - GROWING INSTRUCTIONS - Laelia anceps   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Laelia anceps, a native of Mexico but also occurring more rarely in Guatemala and Honduras, is one of the most common, yet one of the most satisfying orchids.
Laelia anceps is one of the hardiest for cold tolerance of any of the Cattleya alliance, tolerating reported lows of 22ºF without any damage, and high temperatures over 100ºF rarely trouble it.
Laelia anceps is one of the more temperature tolerant orchids in cultivation today, making it a natural for outdoor growing in southern California and comparable climates.

Brazil is host to a variety of lovely laelias, and the Laelia harpophylla is such a flower.
Laelia harpophylla generally blooms January - March (southern hemisphere, their summer), however, there were several plants in bloom during the month of October at the WOC in Rio de Janiero.
Laelia harpophylla is found in the states of Minas Gerais and Espiritu Santo.

The Mexican species, Laelia anceps and Laelia gouldiana, are arguably the easiest to grow under cool conditions, especially if you have a shadehouse with a fibreglass roof, so that the plants can be kept fairly dry in winter.
In its native habitat Laelia anceps grows on tree trunks or branches on the edge of forests at altitudes of 1500-2000 m.
Laelia anceps can also be grown in a pot, using coarse bark as the potting medium.

Laelia purpurata is probably the finest plant within this genus, although lobata, crispa and tenebrosa are also most desirable.
This plant is from the Brazilian prairie habitat, and the notes and cultural recommendations appropriate for that section should be referred to.
Many of these species come from the Monsoonal Foothill Rainforest habitat, which is subject to the summer monsoon, warm humid summers when the main growth occurs, and cool dry winters when they rest.

The species is closely related to Laelia mixta, which is native from the State of Espírito Santo, but Laelia alvaroana has smaller flowers with orange-yellow flowers instead of pure yellow.

 Aelia Laelia Crispis
As Maier notes, the mounds represented the persistance of the old cults despite Christianization, a parallel that was not lost to the later practice of alchemists.
Barnaud calls Aelia 'solar.' presumably a derivation from *helios*, 'sun.' Laelia he interprets as 'lunar.' Crispus (curly-haired), thinks Maier, comes from the curly hairs which are converted into a 'very fine powder.' Maier obviously has in mind the tincture, the arcane substance.
With this background in mind Aelia Laelia, however it was misconstrued by Jung (although hardly by Maier and Bernaud) is undone as nonsense (all my references to the Florealia and Lel and Po-Lel are drawn from the work of Jacob Grimm).

In this respect, these large-flowered Brazilian Laelias are more closely related to the large-flowered labiata-type Cattleyas than Cattleya labiata is to the bifoliate cut-lip Cattleya species, where lip and other flower distortions do occur in their hybrids.
Laelia purpurata is without doubt one of the finest of all cultivated orchids.
Laelia purpurata has large flowers, 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm) across, and there are usually four or five flowers on a spike.

According to the proposal made by Lou Menezes (in her book "Laelia Purpurata"), Laelia purpurata, which flowers are completely white or with the throat presenting a yellow coloration of varied intensity, should be considered as variety virginalis.
Still according to the same author, the variety alba, settled by Veitch, describes a plant with white flowers and the surface of the lip pale pink veined.

Most of the houses in the glasshouse range at Cambridge University Botanic Garden house rather static collections, with each house being devoted to a different sort of climate, but the Conservatory is used to show off whatever plants are currently at their best - often the same houseplants as are available in garden centres.
Not all are common houseplants though, and there is a nice display of Lachenalia (Winter flowering bulbs), and of course the Laelia pictured here.

Perhaps one of the reasons for the interest in Laelia purpurata is the enormous color variation possible within the species.

 Laelia Purpurata p.1
For Laelia purpurata, which is really a Cattleya, things even seem to be going from bad to worse, as I see recent efforts to reclassify this wonderful large and showy species as a member of the genus Sophronitis, which is composed of miniatures (Lindleyana, 15[2]:118).
This orchid, however, came from Brazil, not Mexico, and it had tall pseudobulbs that were similar to the pseudobulbs of a large-flowered Cattleya species.
He later changed these Brazilian orchids to Laelia crispa and Laelia lobata as he got himself increasingly locked into the concept that the difference between eight and four pollinia was significant enough to justify a new genus.
