Foster's manner was easy and impressive, his voice was clear and well modulated, he had a wonderful command of language, an adroitness in grouping the telling facts developed by the testimony and a forcible mode of presenting the same that had a potent effect on the court or the jury.
Foster united with his associate senators from the northern states in resisting the arrogant demands of the slave power, and by voice and vote sustained the doctrine of human freedom and the equality of all men before the law.
Foster to the legislature of the state; he was once more chosen Speaker; and, before the close of the session, he was elected a Judge of the Supreme Court, a position which he filled until 1876, when, having reached seventy years of age, he was disqualified by a provision of the constitution.

Vice President Andrew Johnson advanced to President, and Foster, as President pro tem, stepped into his place as President of the Senate and de facto Vice President of the US on April 15, 1865.
He served in that capacity for almost two years, until in March of 1867 he was replaced as US Senator from Connecticut by Orris S. Ferry.
Had John Wilkes Booth's original plan to assassinate both Lincoln and Johnson on the same night had been successful, Foster would have become President of the United States.

Reginald Foster came to America in one to the vessels embargoed by King Charles I, accompanied by his wife, Judith, five sons and two daughters,and settled in Ipswich, Mass., about the year 1638, and was one of the earliest inhabitants of that town.
Frederic Clifton Pierce in his genelogy of the Fosters devotes several pages to his life in Ipswich Mass., and states that he was an active citizen of that town.
Other books giving an account of Reginald Foster and his descendants were published by Edward Jacob Forster, M.D., of Boston in 1876 and by Perley Derby of Salem Mass in 1872.
