		Lafonia is a peninsula forming the southern part of East Falkland, the largest of the Falkland Islands.
		The geology of north west Lafonia is Permian, and similar to that of parts of Ecca Pass in South Africa [1].
		Lafonia played an important part in the Falklands War (see Battle of Goose Green) with the first land battles; over a thousand Argentine personnel were stationed there, and there is an Argentine Military Cemetery here.

		The area south of Goose Green is called Lafonia and is very flat, which helps "camp" driving.
		It was getting dark after crossing the suspension bridge into Lafonia and both Ray and Matt started going too far left towards Walker Creek.
		Tracks in Lafonia weren't so well used by landrovers, so they tended to be just marks in the grass and more difficult to see at night.

		Darwin is a settlement in Lafonia on East Falkland, lying on Choiseul Sound, on the east side of the island's central isthmus, 4 km north of Goose Green.
		Darwin was founded in 1859 as the centre for sheep farming in Lafonia, which it remained until 1922.
		The farm was then transferred to Goose Green, south of Darwin and separated by the Boca Wall of peat, which grew to overshadow Darwin.

		Darwin and Goose Green are situated less than a mile apart on the narrow neck of land that joins the southern Lafonia section of East Falkland to the northern Wickham Heights region.
		Built from a kit imported from England in 1824-25 to shorten the distance sheep needed to be driven from southern Lafonia to the shearing sheds in Goose Green, it is still an incredible sight.
		Port Howard, on West Falkland Island, is one of the last remaining large farming settlements in the Falklands.

		The bulk of the Islands are composed of Silurian to Devonian sedimentary rocks, while the southern part of East Falkland (also known as Lafonia) is predominantly Carboniferous to Permian in age.
		The oldest rocks on the Island are Pre-Cambrian gneisses and granite found at Cape Meredith in the very southern part of West Falkland, and the youngest occur as several suites of igneous dykes of Jurassic age that cut across the Islands with various orientations.
		Starting about 280 million years ago, the rocks were deformed and over-thrust into a mountain range, a fragment of which now forms the Wickham Heights in East Falkland.

		One Gurkha bn has been permanently in the UK since then with HQ at Church Crookham near Aldershot.
		In the Falklands 1/7th landed with 5 Brigade at San Carlos and carried out minor operations around Goose Green including the clearing of Lafonia.
		They were then ferried by sea to Bluff Cove and were preparing to assault Mount William when the cease-fire was ordered.

		Recent research on the Falkland Islands has revealed further contrasts between East and West Falkland in: (a) the sedimentary, kerogen facies and thermal maturity of the West Falkland and Lower Lafonia groups and; (b) the structural relief of 6–8 km across the Hornby Anticline between West and East Falkland.
		These factors indicate that East Falkland has been downthrown to the SE along the Hornby Mountain Fault from Devonian until Jurassic times.
