Lagaan, (लगान, meaning land tax in Hindi) (also known as Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India) is an award winning movie made in India, released on June 1, 2001 and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (the award actually went to No Man's Land that year).
Captain Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne), the vicious commanding officer of a British cantonment, oppresses the people of the region with high taxes (lagaan) while they are also suffering under an unusual droughtand wait for the monsoons to come and rain on its crops, but the ground remains dry and infertile.
Lagaan along with Dil Chahta Hai released later that year had a considerable impact on the Indian audiences who were plain tired of the stale formulaic films of old.

LAGAAN (4+ outta 5 stars) Years of subjugation and unfair taxation by the British Empire come to a head and the inhabitants of a small Indian farming community face off against their evil oppressors...
This may seem like a ridiculous idea for a movie (and I won't even mention the fact that it's a musical) but this was the most exciting and wonderful movie I've seen in quite some time.

After seeing Lagaan on many Bollywood’s “must-see” lists and hearing about its praise in general, I had a hard time trying to warm up to it.
Lagaan is at heart a good film but I really wonder how Aamir Khan and crew came up with the idea of combining a story on tax and cricket with a British versus Indian storyline.
The reason why Lagaan was unusually long even for a Bollywood film is that it covered a cricket match of the Brits versus Indians over a period of 3 days plus a quadra-love-angle, having simple villagers learn the British sport in 3 months, and some ethnic-religious conflicts/resolutions!
