En 1908 the managers of Lagavulin decided to build a new distillery, Malt Mill with the clear intention to compete with the neighbour distillery, Laphraoig.
Lagavulin is one of the great classics from Islay (not only because it is part of the UDV series “Classic malts”).
All the spirit of Islay, (the sea, the peat and the smoke), remarkably balanced is concentrated in it.

Lagavulin is big, but it is so well balanced.

By Friday the winds had eased off making Lagavulin Bay a comfortable anchorage for the 27 yachts there, although the majority of the fleet had opted to berth at nearby Port Ellen, making use of the newly opened pontoons.
Since Lagavulin Distillery is the final stopover for the Classic Malts Cruise, it was a great atmosphere ashore amongst the Cruisers, distillery staff and a host of local visitors gathered for the ceilidh.

Both are bottled at a percentage somewehere between 'standard' and 'cask strength'; 46% for the Lagavulin and 50% for the Laphroaig.

It was a tally echoed by the group, which placed Lagavulin second, the 12-year-old Yoichi third and the Balvenie fourth.
I love the stuff, which is unfortunately in low supply at the moment due to low production 16 years ago (expected to be available again in 2005, I believe).
If you're partial to Lagavulin, languagehat, you should try getting your hands on a bottle of an Islay whisky called 'Port Ellen', which I'd rate as the best scotch I ever had.

Lagavulin, excellent, again it does not matter how old it is.
I would rather sip the Lagavulin, Talisker, or Laphroiag, to be sure, but due to cost I reserve them for special occasions and nights out.
