 Sun.Star Baguio - Skills olympics bring out best of Ifugao talents
LAGAWE, Ifugao -- The provincial skills olympics conducted yearly by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) during the celebration of the Ifugao foundation, have been bringing out the best of Ifugao technical talents that have won awards in regional, national, and international competitions.
Ifugao also won the gold in commercial writing and furniture and cabinet making for both the open and youth category in the 1999 regional skills competition wherein Jose Nayangahan and Brenda Tegui-in of Lamut, Ifugao won first place in the open and youth category, respectively, in commercial writing.
In 2000, Dennis Teaue of Kiangan, Ifugao became a gold medallist in the regional skills competition and silver medallist during the 2001 Philippine national skills competition in joinery under the youth category and became a member of the Philippine delegation to the Asean skills competition held at Jakarta, Indonesia last October 2001.

 Sun.Star Baguio - Ifugaos oppose ‘unjust’ fare hike
The proposed fare increase include Lagawe to Bolog - from P8 to P10; Lagawe to Nayon - P10 to P15; Lagawe to Lamut - P18 to P25; Lagawe to Kiangan, P7 to P10; Lagawe to Banaue, P17 to P20; and Lagawe to Solano - P29 to P37.
They also maintained that the terrain and road conditions of Ifugao cannot be compared to those of Mountain Province and Benguet because Ifugao roads are a lot better than those of the two provinces, especially with the route to Lamut, Lagawe, Kiangan, and Banaue which are all cemented and well-maintained by the DPWH.
The students, mainly from the Ifugao State College of Agriculture and Forestry, are worried that the exorbitant fare increase will surely pose another threat to their studies since most of them come from poor families.

On August 12, the Patipat, an old Ifugao ritual to drive away rats from the fields which was last performed 48 years ago, was revived in Barangay Amduntog, in the municipality of Asipulo, Ifugao.
Juan Dait, Jr., PCNCM director in Ifugao, said the ritual was almost lost in memory because of the introduction of new farming methods and new ways to protect rice fields from rats and diseases.
The traditional worldview of the Ifugao that nature is inherited from the past and borrowed from the future dictates that they only take what they need for the moment, thus saving the forest from indiscriminate logging.

 Sun.Star Baguio - No shortage of teachers in Lagawe Central School
LAGAWE, Ifugao -- Contrary to the complaint of faculty members of the Lagawe Central School that there is a shortage of teachers in grades one, two and five, Ifugao Schools Division Superintendent Teresita Velasco claims that there is an excess of school teachers there this school year.
But Velasco denied all their allegations by showing the records containing the teachers' deployment analysis of Lagawe Central School claiming that this record indicate that there is actually no shortage of teachers but an excess of them.
She explained that as per records, classrooms in grades one, two and five, where a shortage allegedly exist are only having a ratio of more than 30 and less than 40 pupil to a teacher, which is way below the prescribed maximum of 50 pupils per teacher in a classroom.

Saturday, December 6, 2003 11:53 PM A young Ifugao physician, who forsook a lucrative practice in the metropolis and went back to the mountains to serve his own people, was picked to receive the grand plum of the 13th Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Award last weekend at the EDSA Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong City.
He organized the Ifugao Field Health Workers Association and a Botika sa Barangay (Drug Store in the Barangay) before partly leaving Lagawe in 1991 to teach at Saint Louis University in Baguio and serve as coordinator of the UP Regionalization Program for the Cordilleras.
In the far-flung barrios of Lagawe, Ifugao, he labored as a clinician, microscopist, administrator, educator and trainor while addressing health concerns like malnutrition.

LAGAWE, Ifugao (11 October) -- As of August this year, the Land Bank of the Philippines here has granted a total of P79.5M in loans to 1,149 farmers, entrepreneurs and government employees in the province.
LBP-Lagawe Branch Department Manager Lorenzo M Saquing said out of the said amount, P14.6M was granted to eight (8) Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs); P48.5M to 684 farmers and P16 M to various individual livelihood loans availed by 457 government employees of the provincial government and other local government units here.
Saquing, who came to the province in 2004 said program is in line with the bank’s thrust of extending agri/agra loans to beneficiaries, and aims to improve the economic condition of the people of Ifugao.
