Recent analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene indicates that the genus Lagenorhynchus, as traditionally conceived, is not a natural (monophyletic) group.

The Pacific White-sided Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) is a very active dolphin found in the cool to temperate waters of the North Pacific Ocean.
It is the only species of the genus Lagenorhynchus to be found in the North Pacific.
Though the Dusky and Pacific White-sided Dolphins are traditionally placed in the genus Lagenorhynchus, recent molecular analyses indicate that they are actually more closely related to the dolphins of the genus Cephalorhynchus.

The species of the genus Lagenorhynchus, collectively known in colloquial parlance as lags, are dolphins without prominent beaks located in the worlds temperate and subpolar waters.
Each species is identifiable by its unique coloration, and they each have several common names, often related to the color pattern.
The white-beaked dolphin is found in the cold temperate and subarctic waters of the northern North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, south to Cape Cod and Portugal.
