Identification of species and measurement of tetrodotoxin in dried dressed fillets of the puffer fish, Lagocephalus lunaris. The toxicity and species of dried dressed fish fillets were investigated.
The toxin preparation was further purified and identified as tetrodotoxin and anhydrotetrodotoxin by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy.
The species of these fillets could not be distinguished from Lagocephalus lunaris by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis or restriction site and sequence analysis of a polymerase chain reaction amplicon of the cytochrome b gene.

In this study, toxicity of two puffer fish species from the Brazilian coast was examined.
Specimens of Sphoeroides spengleri and Lagocephalus laevigatus were caught in São Sebastião Channel (North coast of São Paulo State, Brazil) between January 1996 and May 1997.
Acidic ethanol extracts from muscle and skin plus viscera were tested for mice acute toxicity using the standard method of Kawabata.

The harmless puffer fish Lagocephalus gloveri has been used to prepare dried dressed fish fillet, a favorite Taiwanese snack food.
The aims of this study were to determine the differential characterization of the urea-soluble protein components of puffer fish species and to establish a preliminary proteomic database.
Muscle proteins of five species (Lagocephalus gloveri, L. wheeleri, L. lunaris, L. inermis, and L. sceleratus) were extracted by 8 M urea solution and determined by Coomassie protein assay, followed by immobilized pH gradient-2-D electrophoresis.
