Lagonda have always been a sporting concern and a programme of long-distance events were entered with 2 litres and later 3 litres.
For this model Lagonda decided not to build the bodywork themselves, probably for space reasons and the standard bodies were supplied by Abbott of Farnham, although several other coachbuilders performed on this chassis.

For the low chassis engine the dynamo was moved from the offside to the nose of the crankshaft where it fitted underneath the radiator.
There was then no Lagonda made for nearly four years until the Motor Show of 1961 when the 4 litre Rapide was introduced (96 x 92mm, 3995cc).
Note: Arnold welcomes inquiries from people who have "found" Lagondas and the Club operates a very effective service to establish provenance of any model but particularly pre-war ones where the records were destroyed during the War.

A 12/18 model was run in the Moscow to St. Petersburg Reliability Trials of 1910 and its success led to many 20 and 30 hp models being exported to Russia in the years prior to the war.
In 1935 Lagonda stopped marketing this model and a separate company Rapier Cars Ltd. was formed to market this model as a make in its own right.
In September 1947 Alan Good sold Lagonda to the David Brown Group, who used the WO Bentley designed LB6 2.5 litre six-cylinder engine in the Aston-Martin's up to the DB2 MkIII.

The earlier V8 Lagonda is known as the series 1 - the wedge shaped Lagondas are known as the series 2, 3 and 4.
This is probably the oldest surviving Aston Martin Lagonda (it was at this time classed as an Aston Martin, although later the name was shortened to Lagonda).
The Lagonda was from a time of cars like the Ferrari 308GT4 and Lotus Esprit, but more than any other car defined 'edge' design as these shots show.

But I have had to make a firm decision, and that is to use the Lagonda Vignale to begin the story of the V12 Vanquish - and as you're now confused, I had better explain.
The Lagonda Vignale was commissioned by AML (already fully owned by Ford) from Ghia Design (also part of the Ford family) to be shown at the 1993 Geneva Salon.
So, in my opinion, the important ideas behind the Lagonda Vignale clearly identify it as the first vehicle in the story of the V12 Vanquish.

In 1985 almost 100 Lagondas, about half the annual production, were produced by the Newport Pagnell factory, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd’s stronghold, and delivery time went from three and a half years to less than one year.
Very innovative in some aspects, for example its almost lavish style and digital instrumentation, the Lagonda was at the same time the guarantor of the craftsman’s tradition.

Aston Martin and Lagonda in Miniature
Fitted with a W. Bentley designed six-cylinder engine acquired through his purchase of the Lagonda works and constantly improved throughout its long production life, the DB2 and the variants which evolved from it epitomized the concept of a "gentleman's express" to a degree never equaled by its rather staid and home-grown competitors.
As one of Britain's crowning automotive stars, Lesney opted to add a very accurate model of the DB2 to its 1-75 lineup and over the years offered in only two colors (which were both very true to the prototype) and a few different wheel variations.
A bold and thoroughly unique design even by today's standards, the ultra-angular and very costly Lagonda was an immediate hit with wealthy people for whom a Rolls or Bentley was simply too common and mundane.
