Misamis Oriental is subdivided into 24 municipalities and 2 cities.
During the latter part of the 19th century, Misamis was one of the 6 districts of Mindanao, and later, one of the seven districts in Mindanao and Sulu at the close of the Spanish era with Cagayan de Misamis, now Cagayan de Oro, as its capital.

Recognizing the potential of the mangrove plantation, the Laguindingan municipal environment and natural resources office proposed the conversion of the mangrove plantation into an aqua marine park for eco-tourism.

Both basic and advanced handloom weaving technologies were introduced and transferred to the beneficiaries through a series of on-site trainings.
The technology on Silk Handloom Weaving was introduced to ABAI Weavers in mid 2001 by the Department of Science and Technology-10 (DOST-10) through the initiation of the Misamis Oriental Cagayan de Oro Federation of Cooperatives (MCFEDCO).
Mindanao and Laguindingan Silks were the first pure handwoven silk fabrics that were ever produced locally in Mindanao, particularly in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.

Silk for the show was handmade and woven by 30 women from Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, supported by the Ayala Foundation through funding (R1-million worth), technology and product development, marketing and promotions.
This effort was started back in August of 2001, established for women members of the Ayala Beneficiaries Association (ABAI) based in Misamis Oriental.
For the show, the designers utilized the Laguindingan silk, which comes in two varieties: one is the sheer type, a very light fabric with subtleties of luster while the other one is a thicker, dupionne type.
