 Ptolemy I Soter
Ptolemy was born in 367 as the son of a Macedonian nobleman named Lagus and a woman named Arsinoe, who may or may not have belonged to a minor branch of the Macedonian dynasty.
Their son is called a youth friend of Alexander, but being older than the crown prince, his role can perhaps better be interpreted as that of some sort of adviser.
However this may be, the son of Lagus certainly took part in the battle of Issus in November 333 and joined Alexander's journey to the oracle of Ammon, in the Libyan desert, in the spring of 331.

 The IVA: Finnish Armoured Brigade
During the attack phase of what is known in Finland as the Continuation War of 1941-1944, armoured troops successfully participated in operations as Detachment Lagus, and revealed to the high command the value of armoured troops working independently.
On 28 June 1942, the Armoured Division was founded and 1st Knight of the Mannerheim Cross (the Mannerheim Cross is the highest possible decoration in Finland, equivalent to the Croix de Guerre or the Victoria Cross), Major General Ruben Lagus was appointed as Commander.
The severe defensive battles on the Karelian Isthmus in the summer of 1944 gave impressive evidence of the effectiveness of the co-operation of all the branches in the armoured formation and of the striking force of armoured weapons.

Ptolemy I   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
On these grounds Collins proposes that the story that Philip II was Ptolemy's father was propaganda of Ptolemy Ceraunus, designed to justify his claim to the Macedonian throne by showing that he was a male-line if distaff member of the Argaead dynasty.
Collins concludes, I think correctly, that Arsinoe was married off to Lagus while pregnant with Ptolemy, as stated by Pausanias, but that his true father was unknown.
The description of Ptolemy as "son of Lagus" therefore refers to Lagus as his official or adoptive father, the husband of his mother, rather than to his biological father.
