Lahn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Important cities at the Lahn include Marburg, Gießen, Wetzlar and Limburg.
Lahn was also the name of a city which was created on January 1, 1977 when the two cities Gießen and Wetzlar were merged.
However as the merger was very unpopular as well as inefficient -- it had been imposed on the cities against the will of almost all inhabitants -- it was reverted on July 31, 1979, so the city Lahn only existed for 2.5 years.

HHMI News: Gene May Be Key to Evolution of Larger Human Brain
Lahn and his colleagues compared the sequence of the human ASPM gene to that from six other primate species shown genetically to represent key positions in the evolutionary hierarchy leading to Homo sapiens.
Lahn and his colleagues found that the ASPM gene showed clear evidence of changes accelerated by evolutionary pressure in the lineage leading to humans, and the acceleration is most prominent in recent human evolution after humans parted way from chimpanzees.
Lahn and his colleagues plan functional comparisons of the ASPM protein among different species, to understand how this gene's function or regulation changes with evolution.

Human cognitive abilities resulted from intense evolutionary selection, says Lahn
Lahn and his team argue that this selective process impacted a significant fraction of genes in the human genome.
Lahn and his colleagues now are focusing on these outlier genes, which may reveal more about how the human brain became bigger and better.
Lahn also is considering the wider impact of this research.

Lahn’s analysis of genes indicates human brain continues to evolve
Lahn previously showed that there was accelerated evolution in humans among numerous genes, including microcephalin and ASPM (abnormal spindle-like microcephaly-associated).
That implies that this must have happened because of positive selection,” Lahn said, pointing out that it is statistically unlikely for a haplogroup this young to have such high frequency as a result of mere random genetic drift.
Lahn and his colleagues stress these studies only examine two genes, and that the genetic variations within a population often are almost as great as the differences between groups.

Loss of function of the ASPM gene is linked to human microcephaly – a severe reduction in the size of the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for planning, abstract reasoning and other higher brain function.
Lahn and his colleagues compared the sequence of the human ASPM gene to that fromsix other primate species shown genetically to represent key positions in the evolutionary hierarchy leading to Homo sapiens.
According to Lahn, among the next steps in his research will be to understand how ASPM functions in the brain.
