Michael Pastreich is executive director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in Illinois.
During his term as an American Symphony Orchestra League Management Fellow, he interned with the symphony organizations in Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis.
Under his leadership, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra has become Illinois’ second largest orchestra.

Together with Leonidas Kavalkos and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Gramophone Award for year's best concerto recording 1991.
Debut as conductor with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1979, which engaged him as it main visiting conductor in 1985 and as head conductor in 1987.
Lebrecht attributes the boom in the number of conductors to the excellent music teaching in schools, the large number of youth orchestras and the seven professional symphony orchestras that Finland boasts.

Louis Lortie appeared with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vanksa performing Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.3 and Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.1 on tour at the Lincoln Center, New York.  Lortie also returned to Toronto Symphony Orchestra where he played Mozart Concerto for two pianos with Angela Hewitt.
Last month Thierry Fischer conducted the Ulster Orchestra in Brahms’s symphony cycle which spanned three concerts and included Hungarian Dances 1, 3, 10 and the double concerto for violin and cello, as well as all four symphonies.  All the concerts were broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Fischer returned to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a programme including  Mozart Symphony 36 and Poulenc Sinfonietta, and Pierre Laurent Aimard in Mozart Piano Concerto 23.  In February Fischer conducts Haydn symphonies 94 and 102 and Finzi’s Dies Natalis with the Orchestra della Radiotelevisione della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano.

Vänskä, the Minnesota Orchestra's music director, put together an ABBA program three years ago for his orchestra in Finland, the Lahti Symphony, using the vocal ensemble Rajaton and orchestrating much of the material himself.
He repeated it the following year in Lahti, and he will do so again, this time with the Minnesota Orchestra, and Rajaton as guests, as part of the Weekender Pops series.
