Lake Abaya is the largest of the Ethiopian rift valley lakes.
The area in which the lake lies is mainly volcanic in origin while the waters of the lake are permanently turbid due to a heavy colloidal suspension of ferric oxide.
The fish fauna of Lake Abaya is essentially soudanic and is the most varied of the Ethiopian lakes.

Lake Tana, the largest lake, in Ethiopia is the source and from where the famed Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum, and on to the Mediterranean.
Near Gorgora, at the northern end of the lake, the Susneyos palace is a forerunner of the magnificent palaces and castles of Gonder, and dates from the reign of Emperor Susneyos.
There are several turnoffs leading to the lake shore Tall fig trees line the original shore, but in recent years the level of the lake has dropped to such an extent that several hundred metres of grassland and reeds come between you and the water.

It is situated perfectly on an escarpment overlooking Lake Abaya to the north, Lake Chamo to the south, and the Rift Valley to the west, with mountains rising to almost 4000 metres.
Eggs are collected from the lakeshores, then incubated and hatched at the farm, although a number have been re-introduced to keep the natural population in balance.
They are both ringed by savannah plains and the ridge of land that divides the two lakes is known as ‘Bridge of God’ or ‘Heaven’ because of the beautiful views from it.
