The Board's area covers the whole of Lakes Alexandrina and Albert, and the upper north lagoon of the Coorong (hundred of Bonney), including the river mouth.
This is the area referred to as the Coorong and Lower Lakes ERA in the SA Murray-Darling Basin Biodiversity Plan, an area defined as a threatened habitat area warranting focused action for biodiversity conservation (DEH, 2001).
The terrestrial habitats of the Lower Lakes and the Coorong include coastal and salt-influenced habitats, as well as unusual aquatic habitats in the Coorong and a unique set of ephemeral salt lakes (Lothian and Williams, 1988).

As he attempted to reach the ocean from the southern extremity of the lake complex he observed, 'it was in vain that we beat across the channel from one side to the other it was a continued shoal (submerged sandbank), and the deepest water appeared to be under the left bank.
The explorer's observations indicate that Lake Alexandrina was shallow and salty and without a navigable passage to the ocean many decades before water was first extracted from the Darling and Murray Rivers for irrigation.

Following Sturt the whole area along the Murray and around Lake Alexandrina was opened up particularly by overlanders who moved sheep and cattle across the land.
Sturt had hoped the lake might have access to Gulf St Vincent and it wasn't until the following year that Collet Barker sailed along the western shoreline and demonstrated that the Lake was the mouth of the Murray River.
The town was visited in 1867 by the Duke of Edinburgh, the son of Queen Victoria, who went on a shooting expedition on Lake Alexandrina and planted a willow tree (which is still standing) near the present site of the town's bowling club.

Having visited Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd, most travellers on a southbound journey progress from Tekapo directly to the lookout point at Lake Pukaki, just before the turn-off to Highway 80 to view Aoraki / Mt Cook, missing what I consider to be one of the most "New Zealand" landscapes in NZ.
