Lake Karum (also known as Lake Assal) is a lake in the Afar Region of Ethiopia.
North of Lake Karum is the former mining settlement of Dallol.
The lake is extremely salty and is surrounded by a salt pan, which is still mined, the salt being transported by caravan to the rest of the country.

Interesting/fun things to do in the area: Lake Asal is an interesting excursion destination.
There are imported souvenirs from neighboring countries, but they are a lot cheaper to buy in their country of origin than they are in Djibouti.
Recommended movies/videos related to this city: The lava rock-strewn scenes in Planet of the Apes (the original) were filmed in Djibouti near the Ethiopian border (if that tells you anything).

AB: Because it is subaerial, the Asal rift in the Afar depression of Djibouti provides an exceptional opportunity to study the mechanics of active rifting.
The exception is the segment boundary between the Salt Lake and Provo segments where range front ages suggest exhumation rates in the CIB have been greater by a factor of two or more than in the Provo segment to the south.
However, although active faults extend 40 km from Lake Asal (NW) to the Ghoubbet (SE), only those in the northeastern, emerged part of the rift appear to be seismic in the last 20 years.

The eastern border is less precise, with some placing it at the Benue Trough, and others on a line running from Mount Cameroon to Lake Chad.
