The term Bangweulu is sometimes applied to the whole depression, but is properly confined to the area of clear water.
South of Bangweulu the swamp extends to 12 10 S. Into this swamp on its east side flows the Chambezi, the most remote head stream of the Congo.
Though heard of by the Portuguese traveller, Francisco de Lacerda, in 1798, Bangweulu was first reached in 1868 by David Livingstone, who died six years later among the swamps to the south.

Lake Tanganyika is about 2600 ft. above sea-level, with a length of about 400 M. and an average breadth of nearly 40 M. Lake Mweru and Lake Bangweulu are respectively 3000 and 3760 ft. above sea-level; Lake Chilwa is 1946 ft. in altitude.
The nearest approach to a desert is the rather dry land to the east and north-east of Lake Mweru.
The hippopotamus is found in the lakes and rivers, and all these sheets of water are infested with crocodiles, apparently belonging to but one species, the common Nile crocodile.

The Bemba people in Zambia originated from the Kola region in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire), and are an offshoot of the ancient Luba empire.
Oral historical accounts differ slightly, but there is general agreement that the Luba immigrants arrived in the high plateau area of north-eastern Zambia (extending from Lake Bangweulu to the Malawi border) sometime during the mid 17th century.
This area was already settled by agriculturalists, but by the end of the 18th century the Bemba people had established a powerful kingdom under the central authority of Chitimukulu, the paramount chief.
