When we reached Lake Benmore the roads changed to atrocious gravel but we proceeded to look at the boat harbour and campsite, basic with many caravans and then along the lakeside to another campsite at Fort Rose, which did not seem to have any facilities other than a boat ramp although many caravans were encamped.
On the way back we looked at Lake Clearwater, people were sailing on it and opposite the little township, mainly comprising cribs, there was another lake with what might be freedom camping and certainly tables for picnics and a long drop or two.

The control gates (dam) were built across the outlet of Lake Tekapo in 1940 and were used to regulate the amount of water entering the Tekapo River which contributes the Waitaki River and passes through the Waitaki power station in the lower reaches of the river.
In periods of heavy rainfall, excess water can be released from the lake through the control gates and then spilled over the slipway at Lake George Scott into the lower Tekapo River and down to Lake Benmore.
It is alleged a number of huge trout have been caught near the salmon farm, their size a result of scavenging the feed that drops through the cages of the farm.

Lake Benmore has been given a clean bill of health after four reports all confirmed mercury levels in the lake are well within safety limits, the Treasury announced today.
The reports were undertaken after information emerged last year that drums containing porcelain mercury arc valves were disposed of in Lake Benmore by the New Zealand Electricity Department on two occasions, in 1969 and 1973-74.
There will be ongoing periodic tests of mercury concentrations in Lake Benmore trout to ensure mercury levels remain within strict safety limits.
