The future use of Lake Berryessa development won't be in the other 88 percent of the lake, not even 12 percent of the current resort areas.

LAKE BERRYESSA - On a day the sun turned the water's surface into a sea of diamonds, the federal manager of Lake Berryessa scanned the shoreline from a briskly paced pontoon boat.
There also are a lot of people, rooted along the shoreline in 1,300 mobile homes and travel trailers of mixed vintage, people who have rented their lakeside spots through long-term contracts with the federal government.
The bureau, which manages contracts with seven resorts along the lake, is searching for a new contractor to provide recreational services such as boat launches, campgrounds and boat rentals that would replace the clusters of mobile homes.

Building trails and creating quiet zones on the lake, installing cabins and public campgrounds, would not only provide California residents with the type of outdoor experience they prefer, it would bring in more stable vacation visitors which the lack of public accomodations today does not now allow.
The lack of trails, the few swimming areas, the ambiance of a private lake, the unappealing and expensive concession areas, the poorly-sited and crowded commercial campgrounds, and the noise of motor boats and jet skis, all combine to make this area unattractive for our members.

And as the Lake only generates $375,000 a year for the federal government while the operating budget for the Lake is $3.8 million dollars, I am also tired of my federal tax dollars subsidizing the private enjoyment of this lake.

It is imperative that this lake generate more income to support what is inevitable -- continued growth and use of the people who want to visit.
Despite reports to the contrary, redevelopment plans for Lake Berryessa are on track for a decision late this year or early next.
The new Web site by "Citizens to Protect Lake Berryessa," festooned with digitally waving American flags and exhortations to "Join us in protecting our Lake," is just another effort by the trailer owners to retain their exclusive sites.
