Brownwood is on Pecan Bayou at the intersection of U.S. highways 67, 84, and 377, Farm Road 2524, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in south central Brown County.
Brownwood's growth was also reflected in the changing percentage of county residents who lived in the town; though fewer than a quarter of Brown County residents lived in Brownwood in 1900, almost half lived in the city by 1930.
Brownwood's population declined during the 1950s by more than 15 percent to 16,974 in 1960, and has remained relatively static over the next forty years, with 17,368 inhabitants in 1970, 19,203 in 1980, 18,387 in 1990, and 18,813 in 2000.

The lake waters covered approximately 7,200 acres of land acquired by the water district by purchase or by condemnation between 1926 and 1930.
The lake proper is now within the district area but remains the property of the water district and is controlled and managed by the water district.
Water from the lake was originally transported to the irrigators and municipal users by an open concrete-lined gravity flow canal approximately 10 feet in width and 6 feet deep coursing a distance of approximately 7 miles to the filtration plant on the West side of the City of Brownwood.

Lake Brownwood, also known as Brownwood Reservoir, is an artificial lake on Pecan Bayou, eight miles north of Brownwood in north central Brown County (at 31°50' N, 99°00' W).
The lake's normal capacity is 118,900 acre-feet; its maximum capacity is 448,200 acre-feet.
The district's water board acquired ninety acres of land on the south side of the lake, which was sold between 1932 and 1937.
