  Lake County, Indiana Genealogical Records Information
Lake County was formally organized February 15, 1837, derives its name from its local situation, being bounded north by Lake Michigan, east by Porter County, south by the Kankakee River, and west by the State of Illinois.
Prior to establishing the County Seat, court was conducted in the home of Milo Robinson, as nearly all the lands within the limits of Lake County were still the property of the government.
The County Seat was moved back to the location of Milo Robinson's home and was originally to be called "Lake County Courthouse," however, the name being too cumbersome, it was suggest that the county agent, George Earle, and the two proprietors, Judge Clark and Solon Robinson, select a new name.

The English county, as the proper governmental unit to serve a large area, was quickly adopted as the principal form of governance throughout the south.
County commissioners were elected at large rather than from defined districts, which also tended to concentrate political power at the county level rather than in towns and cities.
“Dillon’s Rule” meant that counties had to have specific enabling state legislation to authorize whatever functions they might fulfill at the local level, and to respond to the changing needs of their citizens, they had to petition the legislature for additional authority, which might or might not be granted.

Warden Caren Jones has been transferred to become the director of the Woman’s Work Release program at the jail, according to the Lake County sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said in a news release the reassignment was the result of the Dec. 26 beating of inmate Tommy Ford, which has also brought the suspension of nine correctional officers.

Lake County - The Associated Press explains, "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to investigate a shuttered landfill where high levels of methane, hydrogen cyanide, lead and arsenic have been found."
Indiana residents are upset that the local government knew about toxic dumping in 1975 and did nothing about it, but political figures insist that it was done before there were any state regulations prohibiting the action and that there hasn't been any proven dumping since.

On September 13, 2006, heavy rains caused what became know as the "Deluge of 9-13." Nearly six inches of rain fell on Highland and neighboring towns; Highland and Griffith were hardest hit.
Governor Mitch Daniels declared a State of Disaster Emergency on September 14 for Lake County.
