However, while it was considered desirable that the Lake Eacham Rainbowfish be returned to the lake, the eradication of the translocated fishes from Lake Eacham was considered unlikely to be achievable, economical or sustainable using existing technology.

The Rainbowfish population in Lake Eacham DID become extinct, and IS extinct, due to introduced predatory fish.

The Lake Eacham Rainbow Fish had disappeared from Lake Eacham by 1985.  Its disappearance has been attributed to the predatory and competitive effects of four introduced native fish species — the Mouth Almighty (in particular), the Archerfish, the Banded Grunter and the Bony Bream.  All were introduced into Lake Eacham between 1983 and 1987.
Educate the public about the risks of moving fish from one area to another (translocation).  Continue maintaining captive breeding populations.  Manage recently discovered populations.

We camped near Lake Eacham, which is about 800mtrs above sea level.
The climate changed from hot and humid and often wet to cooler less humid conditions.
