The first hospital in Lake Grace was built in 1926 and is one of only 2 remaining AIM [Australian Inland Mission] Hospitals built by "Flynn of the Outback", to provide medical care in remote areas of Australia during the 1920s and 30s.
The current Lake Grace District Hospital is a solid brick and tile structure, built in 1950, then stated as being "the most modern hospital in the Southern Hemisphere", and was later judged to have significant heritage value and was listed by the Heritage Council in 1999.
Lake Grace is geographically isolated with the nearest hospital at Wagin [125 km].

The clearing of the land around Lake Grace at the turn of the century has resulted in the whole area experiencing long term salinity problems as the water table rises to the surface bringing dissolved salts with it.
Entry to Lake Grace township from Dumbleyung involves crossing a narrow causeway across the lake which offers an excellent opportunity to observe the level of salination in the lake.
The area around Lake Grace is noted for the variety of small mammals including the western mouse, white tailed dunnart, Mitchell's hopping mouse and the ashy-grey mouse.

Western Australia is the state most affected by salinity with 6,918 farms and almost 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land showing signs of salinity, and 45.7% (567,377 hectares) of salinised land unable to be used for production.
Of the 13,475 farms in Western Australia, 2,460 farms (18.3%) are irrigated and the remaining 11,015 farms (81.7%) are non-irrigated.
Across Western Australia the reason that farmers reported as the most important motivation behind changing their land management practices was farm sustainability, with 91.8% of farmers who changed their practices stating this was of medium or high importance.

In December 2000, the watertable at most monitoring sites within the Lake Grace townsite was less than 4 m deep, and at some sites in the south and central areas, it was less than 2 m deep.
The three-day groundwater pumping test in Lake Grace showed that the watertable was lowered about 20 cm about 30 m away from the pumped bore (the bore was pumped at 0.24 L/second or about 21 m3/day), but the level was still falling slowly.
There are opportunities to reduce the groundwater recharge occurring within Lake Grace, and therefore reduce the risk of salinity.
