Lake Hauroko is located in a mountain valley in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand.
The long s-shaped lake is 40 kilometres in length and covers an area of 63 km².
One of the country's southernmost lakes, it is 35 kilometres northwest of Tuatapere, between the similarly-sized lakes Monowai and Poteriteri.

Namu, our transport across Lake Hauroko, was as eager to start the trip as we were, judging by the boat's attempts to break free from its moorings.
Hauroko Burn Hut (10 bunks) is a quick 30 second scamper from the drop-off point.

Hauroko is New Zealand's deepest lake at 462 metres and, some say, it's most beautiful, surrounded by untouched (except by deer and pigs) native forest and for the most part by mountains, which at the head of the lake, within 20km of Dusky Sound, rise to more than 1500 metres.
I sat in the middle of the lake contemplating pushing on, but given the warnings I had received, the fact this trip was intended to be a holiday not an epic, and the increasing wind I opted out.
To the west sheets of spray are whipped off the lake surface as the wind increases and the waves, growing bigger, break loudly on the beach.

The Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand coordinated the rescue of a 66-year-old man this afternoon, injured while tramping near Lake Hauroko, in the southwest of the South Island.
A party of three were walking from the head of Lake Hauroko towards Midway Hut last night, when one person took a wrong turn.
At around 1pm this afternoon the helicopter flew over the hut in which the trampers were staying, at which time they re-activated their beacon to help the helicopter locate them and fly the injured man to Te Anau.

We made a bit of a mistake and instead of dropping down to Lake Jane, we went over the tops which was quite a bit slower.

My plan was to start it at the Manapouri lake side, thus I need to cross the lake from East to West.
Because bookings are essential for the trip across Lake Hauroko (and boat service less frequent), most people start at the Hauroko end.
Also, starting at the Hauroko end lets you time the weather to have good views from the Pleasant Range and Lake Roe, which is definitely the scenic highlight of the trip.

The most frequent tall vascular species in Lakes Te Anau, Manapouri, and Monowai was the adventive Elodea canadensis, which was not recorded in Lakes Hauroko or Poteriteri.
The bottom depth limits of the vegetation ranged from 7.5 to 19 m, with Lake Hauroko, the clearest lake, having the deepest vegetation.
