Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in the state of New Jersey, approximately 4 sq mi (10.4 sq km) in area.
In the 18th century, the lake was known as the "Great Pond." A natural body of water, the area of the lake has been enlarged by the damming of the Musconetcong River, its natural outlet, on the southern side of the lake.
Lake Hopatcong is home to perhaps the greatest variety of fish species of any waterway in New Jersey, with the probable exception of the Delaware River.

Lake Hopatcong's water level will gradually be lowered 26 inches to allow the DEP to inspect the Lake Hopatcong Dam.

Lake Hopatcong was originally created as part of the Morris Canal, a 90-mile waterway that ran from Newark to Phillipsburg and was the chief means of transporting coal, iron and zinc across New Jersey in the 1860s.
