The Illawarra district, as defined in this report, is comprised of the local government areas (LGA) of Wollongong; Shellharbour; Kiama; part of Shoalhaven City Council LGA north of the Shoalhaven River; and the part of Sutherland Shire Council LGA that includes the Royal National Park (Figure 2.1).
The Illawarra is no exception as topographic structure of the landscape and nature of the prevailing air masses are the two major factors that influence the Region's precipitation (Cox 1983, Mills 1986).
Notable areas in the Illawarra whose rainfall patterns are influenced by rainshadows include the Albion Park-Dapto area surrounding Lake Illawarra, the Woronora Plateau west of the Escarpment (see Cox 1983, Mills 1986) and the Lower Kangaroo Valley (township locality).

Nutrient levels in Lake Illawarra continue to rise due to the increasing urban and industrial expansion within its catchment.
The increased rate of infilling of the lake by sediments, which carry nutrients and pollutants to the lake.
Because of these factors Lake Illawarra is highly susceptible to nutrient problems such as recurrent algal blooms and fish kills, particularly when the entrance has been closed for some time and little flushing of the lake occurs.
