Jackson County is said to be the most biodiverse county in Ohio and Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve serves to protect much of that biodiversity.
Lake Katharine is not a wilderness in either a biological or legal sense of the word, but it is still possible to have a wilderness experience there.

Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve is located in Jackson County, Ohio, just northwest of and outside the city of Jackson, Ohio.
The stream that drains the lake is a tributary of Little Salt Creek, which flows through the eastern end of the reserve.
This nature preserve represents the northernmost extension of some southern species, such as bigleaf magnolia, but also includes more northerly species.

Eligible hunters for these youth hunts must be age 17 and under and accompanied by a licensed non-hunting adult at least 18 years of age or older.
