Lake Mahinerangi (geocache) is an hydro lake formed by a 110 foot dam on the Waipori river, about 50km west of Dunedin.
The dam was completed in 1924 to supply electricity to Dunedin city and the lake is named after Olive Mahinerangi Burnett, the daughter of William Barnett, mayor Dunedin, 1911-1912.

Application for the Mahinerangi Wind Farm project was sent to three Councils, being the Clutha District Council, Dunedin City Council, and the Otago Regional Council on the 27th of June 2006.
A Media Statement was released on the 29th of June 2006 announcing the submission of the application for the Mahinerangi Wind Farm.
The Mahinerangi Wind Farm (MWF) is located (map showing location) upon the Otago peneplain, approximately 50 km directly west, or 70 km by road, from Dunedin.

Fortunately this time the weather assisted teams with a tail wind pushing participants down the lake to the site of the second transition, at Lake Mahinerangi Power Station.
Teams experienced minimal difficulty during the paddle and found the kayak to be a warm relief after their long bike ride through the night.

The upper Clutha has a mean flow of about 260m³/s, and a fall of about 83m from Lake Wanaka to the head of Lake Dunstan, which means that there is potentially a large hydro-electric resource available.
The Nevis River rises in the Remarkables and the Hector Mountains to the west and in the Garvie Mountains to the east.
Lee Stream rises in the hill country to the north of Lake Mahinerangi and to the south-east of the Lammermoor Range from where it flows generally south-eastwards to join the Taieri River about 5km upstream of Outram.

Based around the Lake Mahinerangi region near Dunedin, the Subaru foursome got away to a shaky start when they trailed outside the top 10 after the opening 20km mountain bike ride from Beaumont to Miller’s Flat.
The following 36km trek to Lake Mahinerangi totally changed the face of the race, with Bridgedale dropping away and Dunedin’s Team Teviot of John McKennel and Michael Wright taking a lead that they would hold through the remaining mountain bike and trekking sections to win in 13hrs 40min.
The trek through Lake Mahinerangi had seen Dunedin’s Cycle Surgery of Ray Hope, Neil Burrows, Linda Wright and Steve McKinstry move from 7th to 3rd just ahead of Subaru Adventure.

The Environment Court has announced its decision to award TrustPower costs against the Save Lake Mahinerangi Society, which had appealed the conditions of a consent issued to TrustPower under the Resource Management Act for its Waipori Power Scheme.
TrustPower was required under the RMA to obtain a consent in order to continue operating the Waipori power scheme, using a lake created 80 years ago specifically for the purpose of supplying electricity.
The Environment Court noted that certain of the arguments and evidence advanced by the Save Lake Mahinerangi Society were ones on which the appellant could never succeed.
