MIGHTY RIVER POWER : LAKES & POWER STATIONS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Lake Taupo is one of New Zealand's premier tourist attractions and a world-renowned trout fishing lake.
THE LAKE CATCHMENT of 3300sq km covers many streams and rivers with the largest inflows coming from the Tongariro River and from the Tongariro Power Development, both of which drain the peaks in the Kaimanawa Ranges and Tongariro National Park.
Mighty River Power operates the lake within a narrow 1.4 metre range, using the gates to ensure that the water is used efficiently and managed in response to inflows to Lake Taupo and energy demand patterns.

LAKE TAUPO is the main reservoir and 'fuel source' for the hydro system on the Waikato River.
The lake's level is primarily influenced by the hydrological conditions in the catchment, but is also affected by the regulatory requirement on Mighty River Power, to maintain flows down the Waikato River.
The generating units in Maraetai II have sophisticated frequency control and time-error correction equipment, allowing the powerhouse to respond to changes on the national grid in order to maintain the necessary balance between supply and demand.

At the beginning of the eruption, the vent was clear of the lake as there is minimal evidence for water involvement with the erupting magma.
However the lake eventually breached the vent and several stages of the eruption were dominated by mixing of the magma and lake water, with fine ash being formed.
On the lake shore, a rise or fall of the land will be more obvious, as the shoreline will move out or in locally, without an overall rise or fall of the lake level.

The lake is operated within a range of 1.4m, (equivalent to just one percent of the total volume of the lake), to closely mimic natural fluctuations in the lake level.
The level of the lake is also affected by the regulatory requirement to maintain set flow volumes down the Waikato River, irrespective of rainfall in Lake Taupo's catchment.
Daily fluctuations in the hydro lake levels are usually the result of changes in demand for electricity, which is generally greatest in the morning and evening when household electricity consumption is high.

With completion of an upgraded spillway in 1989, MCLs for lakes Ohakuri, Atiamuri, Whakamaru and Arapuni were again raised, although the MCL for Karapiro was lowered.
The agreement also required that the diverting of 'introduced water' from the TPD should cease when the level of Lake Taupo had reached, or was clearly likely to reach, the MCL.
This enabled closer control of the level of the hydro lakes to enable the hydro stations to operate as peak demand generators.
