Marathons come in all varieties, from the gargantuan New York and Chicago Marathons to the tiny Turtle Marathon in Roswell NM -- from the breathtakingly beautiful Big Sur Marathon to the backroads Arkansas Marathon, Malvern to Benton.
Marathon runners had to make eight loops around the lake (3.16 miles each) and the extra distance was added to assure that the marathon course (which is certified) was exactly 26.2 miles.

Soon 3/4ths of the remaining runners bailed at the 1/2 marathon finish in Lake Bluff.

Marathon Oil Co. said Nov. 28 that it has achieved first natural gas production from the Wolf Lake field in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge approximately 12 miles northeast of Soldotna.
Marathon said that ultimate development at the Wolf Lake field may require up to six gas wells at three sites.

Having run twelve marathons prior to this one, I'd always thought that running multiple 5k loops would make it easier to stop running in those tough last miles, but surprisingly, it was the opposite.
I also was surprised that I enjoyed running at night especially around the lake where the lights of the host hotel could be seen from the opposite side of the course.
This was my thirteenth marathon on Friday the thirteenth, but it was anything but bad luck for me. I enjoyed the race and will have a hard time resisting it next year, as you can't find another one quite like it.

The delay on the Marathon results was because some marathon entrants started with the walkers and had a 1.5 to 2 hour head start throwing off our results.
And the guy on the roller blades with the marathon race bib must be still looking for the finish line at Donner Lake, 'cause we never saw him again.
And how about the race director who started the marathon and jumped into his car with a dead battery and had to commandeer a volunteers vehicle and use a Highway patrol red-light escort to get to the 10K and half marathon in time to start those races.....
