Lake Qarun, for example, lies at the edge of the fertile Fayyum region, but at the far end of the lake, in striking contrast, are the dunes of the Western Desert.
One particularly lovely lake is Lake Bardawil, in Sinai, which sits like a blue-green gemstone embedded in dunes of sand that change in color from brown to yellow to pink, depending on the time of day.
Lake Bardawil, fishermen claim, is being choked by weeds because two channels which connect the lake to the Mediterranean are clogged with sand.

Nile perch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adult Nile perch occupy all habitats of a lake with sufficient oxygen concentrations, while juveniles are restricted to shallow or nearshore environments.
The Nile perch was introduced to Lake Victoria, in East Africa, in the 1950s, where it is fished commercially and has had a catastrophic effect on local fishes, causing the extinction of several hundred native species.
Among the Lake Victoria population, 95 percent of the Nile perch's diet consists of native cichlids, at least half of whose species have been totally wiped out.

Talk History Forum - The Lake's Progress
The Ancient Egyptians called the lands and the people west of the fertile Nile valley and Lake Mareotis the Tehenu (Land of the Olive), while the eastern part of the lake was in the Kingdom of the Harpoon.
The comfortable ferry across the lake was probably the preferred route from east to west as well as north to south, and numerous jetties that can still be traced in the mud show that much traffic plied to and forth.
As the lake dried into a salty, marshy swamp the surrounding hills were bared when the thinly rooted vegetation was washed away by rains.

Lake Mariut (Mariout, Maryut, Mareotis), a Landlocked Sea South of Alexandria
Lake Mariut (Mariout, Maryut, Mareotis) is just south of, and actually forms the southern border of Alexandria.
During antiquity, the lake was therefore fed by the Nile through the canals, but since then the water level has continuously declined, leaving the eastern part of the lake dried up, which is now cultivated land.
Nowadays, the lake is about a meter (3 feet) lower than in the Graeco-Roman period, attested by the ancient harbors that now are left somewhat high and dry.

The lake is heavily polluted from industrial, agricultural and domestic effluent sources.
Remediation should focus initially on the northern shore of the lake, but further analyses are necessary to identify a full range of potential organic and inorganic pollutants.

Sandgrouse - Breeding Whiskered Tern in Egypt
HE NILE DELTA lakes in northern Egypt, in particular Lakes Burullus and Manzala, are the most important known wintering areas for Palearctic-breeding Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybridus (Goodman and Meininger 1989).
Although Ticehurst (1912) reported that several Whiskered Tern were at Lake Maryut on 15 May 1909 and according to local people 'many arrive there towards the end of the month and breed in reed-beds', Goodman and Meininger (1989) stated that there was no conclusive evidence that it had bred in Egypt.
Unfortunately, throughout the delta lakes, habitat destruction through reclamation, urbanisation and pollution is occurring so rapidly that, in some cases, we will probably not even know what has disappeared.
